We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jyoti Singh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jyoti , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I have always been a creative person. I am a self taught Cake Artist. I have always loved to bake from my childhood. I was baking often for our family celebrations. But I didn’t have this idea to open my own bakery until we were planning to celebrate my Daughter’s 1st Birthday. I decided to make her birthday cake by myself. This was the first time I tried making 3 tier cake and I was so exited how it turned out. I made everything from scratch. It was challenging but I loved doing that. everyone liked that cake in the party. I was not thinking about creating a business at the time. After getting many complements from family and friends, I decided to make my baking passion as a carrier and started my own home bakery “Celebrate with My Cake” in 2018.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Hi I’m Jyoti, Owner and founder of “Celebrate with My Cake.” As I said earlier I am a self taught Cake Artist. I was born and brought up in India. I am extremely blessed with two super precious little kids Darsh & Avika and such an amazing supportive husband, Ajit.
I specialize in making custom cakes for any occasion. I can create a variety of styles for any occasion, so whatever your hearts desire I can make it happen for your cake. I do specialize in making Indian fusion cakes (Rasmalai Cake and Gulab Jamun Cake) which is my most selling cake till date. I do make everything from scratch as per order
/customer requests and all of my Cakes are Eggless.
Cakes are my canvas. I can spend hours in decorating cake without getting bored. I truly want each cake to be special and reflect everything which my customers dreamed of.
With me, you aren’t just buying a cake, You are literally getting a piece of me. My heart and soul go into every cake I design and create. I don’t want your guest to just eat cake. I want them to talk about how amazing your cake was for years to come.
Another side of mine, I love doing painting, photography and cooking.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Consistency, hard work and being patient is the most important key.
I tried to be consistent in taste and quality of my cakes. When it comes to decorating, I love getting new projects that I have never done. Most people I know draw out an outline of their cake before they make it. For me, once the customer tells me what they are looking for, I start thinking of what I want the cake to look like and from there I start making it. People know what to expect from me when ordering a cake. From the flavors to executing the desired design.
A person isn’t always born lucky. Luck always favors those who work hard. “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” Remember, the only thing that can overcome “hard luck” is “hard work.”
Adaptability and flexibility are skills that helps me to spot opportunities. I do take initiatives and take on new tasks and challenges. Every time learning a new skill stands me up in good stead for the long run. Every time when I made a cake, I learned something new. The more I practiced, the more I learned. With each cake I created, I improved and gained more confidence.
The lesson I learned is that no matter what never give up to your dreams and passion. Be loyal to them who is believing in you. Never be afraid to fail. Failure is the pillar of success. Practice and patience is the most important factor.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I would not be standing here without the support of my family and friends. My husband “Ajit” has been a big support through it all, I am so thankful to my husband who supports me in each and every step. He is a big critic for my cakes. He looks at each and every detail and gives me suggestions as well. He is my backbone and I don’t know what I would do without him. My kids Darsh & Avika always support me.
I got an award from Amazing cake ideas for one of my cakes, “World’s Super Seductive Cake Masterpiece. “ It was not possible without the support of my family, friends and customers.
I don’t think there’s ever a smooth road when you’re putting yourself out there and trying to do something different. I’m a slight perfectionist. Too many times, I came to a point where I was not satisfied with my own work anymore. I would give up, beat myself up over it and take a little break to refocus and try to improve.
Most importantly I want to say thanks to all my customers who believe in me and giving me the opportunity to make cakes for their special occasion. I am so thankful that people would trust me to create cake for their special milestone occasions. Out of all these amazing local cake artists, the fact that they want me to make their cakes still amazes me. It’s been amazing to be part of people’s special moments and creating something unique for each of my customers. It motivates me to do better work when I get wonderful feedback and positive reviews from my customers. When they love their cake they tell their friends and family about my business. Word of mouth is my main advertisement, that helped me a lot to grow my business.
