Meet K Banks

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful K Banks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

K, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

After years of struggling with depression, I needed to find new ways to reward wire my thinking in order to become optimistic and positive. Just like going to the gym, optimism is also a muscle you need to build as well. While my mind was stuck in the trenches of telling me “this will never work out”, I needed to break the expectations I was limiting myself to. I don’t know the outcome, so it’s unfair of me to decide ahead of time how it will go. When you look for evidence of a different outcome, you trick your mind to build other possibilities to present themselves.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

KBanks is a standup comedian making waves in the Vegas comedy scene. The dedicated hard worker is the host for the Comedy Rumble, has created two gameshows, and helped curate a number of venues around the Vegas valley.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Listening: From a past life hairdressing, to sales, to comedy, active listening has been the main ingredient. It’s how you relate, understand, and connect to people.
2. Willingness to be a student: Surrendering to the idea that evolving and challenging yourself to keep pushing for more education will put you in the mentality to search for solutions vs excuses and will be your propeller when motivation takes a break.
3. Celebrate the small wins: It’s easy to be our own worst critic, and most of the times it’s harder to allow yourself to take a breath and celebrate how far you’ve come.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

Meditate. Breathe. Center yourself and put yourself in a point or power before moving. Next, list out all of the things you need to do. Move them in order of how hot the priority is. Look for efficiency–what can you double up? What do you need to get done alone in the quiet vs out and about? Create a path of least resistance. Then, most importantly, figure out how to treat yourself. If you get all your errands done, you get your most favorite iced coffee. Motivate yourself, and rely on determination when needed.
