Meet Kabrea James

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kabrea James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kabrea below.

Kabrea , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

I’m optimistic because I know a better me and a more loving world is always possible. I understand that there is no scarcity of love and that we can always generate more care and compassion for one another.

The decision to ditch corporate and pursue art full time is what truly cemented these feelings. In just a year’s time, I connected with artists from all over who never ran out of love, advice and inspiration to share with me. How could I not pay it forward when their acts of kindness warmed my heart in such a way?

The joy I’ve felt in fellowshipping and dreaming up a new world with other visionaries is always going to be enough reason for me to never give up. I want to light a fire in others to honor the human connections that keep my flame going.

I also know that love is endless, love is liberation and love always wins.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a journalist and artist from Beckley, West Virginia. Formerly a Digital Media Editor and Reporter for the Register-Herald, I am the creator and main contributor of Leuphorique.com, an online publication centered around Black art and spirituality. I also contribute to Black By God – The West Virginian.

In terms of art, I am an acrylic painter looking to translate my love for nature, human connection, spiritual enlightenment and free expression through vibrant color and mixed-media.

I am also currently leading Inner Sunshine Arts, a youth arts initiative in Beckley. We aim to inspire young creatives through story-telling and artistic demonstrations. ISA looks to provoke thought and ignite creation around an array of ideas and concepts. We are always accepting new and gently-used art supplies, as ISA is 100% donation-based and looks to bring FREE art programming to under-served communities.

In the new year, I’m hoping to spear-head my first mural project and continue providing accessible arts activities to youth in my city and beyond!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Being open-minded, authentic and adventurous have made for a wild and wonderful journey thus far. Staying open-minded allows you to be open to new ideas, perspectives and ultimately new connections, as everyone has a different story and background. Authenticity is everything. Once you get settled on who you are and who you want to be, no one or nothing can stop you. Also, you will draw in kindred spirits who truly love you for you. Now when it comes to my adventurous spirit, that’s just the West Virginia in me.

My advice is to be you, think for yourself, always search for deeper meaning and live freely.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

Reading The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra was life-changing for me. This text introduced me to the concept of “pure potential”, which Chopra describes as “being infinite and unbounded; it is pure joy”. I wrote an article titled Children and The Concept of Infinite Potential for LEUPHORIQUE.COM highlighting how children are naturally rooted in this energy. When you feel limitless, your reality takes on that form. When you express gratitude, you manifest more things to be grateful for. Chopra taught me that joy is a state that we can enter any time and stay there as long as we like. We are infinite in a world full of possibilities.
