We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaci Bell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaci, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from recognizing that Multiple Sclerosis is something that I will live with for the rest of my life, and that I’m not promised good days. Some days are really good, but there are days where I can barely walk on my own two feet, or drive myself back home because my hands stop working. So if I can combat a chronic illness that can literally take me down at any moment, I know that I can handle anything that life throws at me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a Multiple Sclerosis warrior defying odds with roller skating. I was diagnosed in 2017 due to severe numbness and tingling that prevented me from driving safely (a secret: I ended up driving myself home with my elbows!) After I got my diagnosis, it was more of a relief than a shock. I felt at peace knowing that there was actually something wrong and I wasn’t making this up. With that information, I had a lot of emotions; not necessarily bad ones, but lots of feels all over. I needed to do something with that pent up energy. And that’s when I discovered my love for roller skating. I taught myself how to skate and even created an instagram page to keep myself accountable. I took on a skate challenge by the manufacture of my skates to skate every single day for a year and progressed effortlessly. During that time I built such a following and community base. People enjoyed my content and couldn’t fathom that I created my own table of skating with a chronic illness—something not often associated. My followers took to the love and positivity that I created for both communities and I inspired so many individuals to be their truest selves despite the adversities against them.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities and areas of knowledge that made my journey impactful were finding community, finding peace in the midst of the storm and knowing that sharing your story, no matter what phase your in, can always be inspirational to others. My advice to others who are newly diagnosed is to feel your feelings: Cry it out. Be frustrated. Feel lost. Feel hopeless. Feel confused. But DON’T live in those feelings. It’s not a death sentence and not everyone’s MS path will be your path. It can be lonely but you’re never alone; the MS community is one of the most supportive communities I’ve ever been apart of. And if you’re comfortable, at some point it will be important to join groups (online, but in person is cool too) to just simply talk it out. Find people in your area that you can share experiences with, learn tips from to make it easier, laugh off the weird stuff that happens to your body, cause oh boy, it gets weird sometimes. But the camaraderie makes it better. Don’t let it consume you, mindset is EVERYTHING 🧡🧡🧡
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am interested in collaborating with other MS warriors, medical professionals, journalists/bloggers/magazine writers, even skaters with chronic illnesses! They can find me on instagram @myelinmoxi !
