We were lucky to catch up with Kacy Momon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kacy, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose as a Multimedia Artist and Designer by embracing a well-rounded approach to the arts. I explored a variety of diverse mediums and techniques. Through interdisciplinary practice, I discovered endless possibilities for creativity and innovation, allowing me to create art that connects with others on a deep level. I believe in “sharing because others are out there.” Sharing my experiences, is only the beginning to paint the bigger picture: my bigger picture. My commitment to creating for reasons bigger than myself has shaped my artistic journey. I define my purpose as an artist as someone who shows up for others on a visual and interpersonal level.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
From a young age, I’ve always wanted to connect with people or places in my work. As a result, lively landscapes and painterly portraits filled my childhood portfolio. Now, even with digital media, I continue to grow as a multifaceted artist.
Focusing on a hyperrealistic style of digital painting, I’ve changed the game. By breaking the boundaries of digital art, I’m able to transform my creations into physical pieces. I take it further than making a print–Through my artistic practice, I take the time to add my own unique embellishments. Utilizing acrylic varnish, paint, pastels, and more. I replicate brushstrokes, patterns, and texture with mixed media tools. By using a variety of mediums and techniques, from traditional markers and paints to digital tools like Photoshop and Procreate, I am able to bring my vision to my life. Closing the gap between what we see on screen, and what we feel in the physical.
What excites me the most about this process are the endless possibilities. Giving those stories, and experiences to the world, which can all be replicated through a single medium.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Observation, self-expression, and empathy have been pivotal in my journey as a multimedia artist and designer. Through keen observation, I am present in capturing the essence and charm of life. In fact, the human experience is what I define and illustrate in my own works. My pieces are deeply personal, as I capture the fleeting moment or feeling in a person, place, or time.
Through authentic self-expression, you’re showing the world who you are through your choices, designs, and creations. Sharing this allows me to show up for my people, other artists and creatives, who want to connect with something larger than themselves.
Lastly, empathy opens a door for others to explore their own abstracted experiences and unique understandings. Channeling art as their medium, this fosters growth and emotional resonance in my work.
For those starting their artistic journey, I recommend honing observational skills, staying true to your unique voice, and cultivating empathy to create art that speaks to the people. Your people.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Being well-rounded in the arts is essential because it allows for a more diverse and dynamic creative practice. By exploring various mediums and techniques, physical or digital, I am able to bring a unique perspective and versatility to my work. This interdisciplinary approach to my artistic practice enables me to seamlessly blend different methods and mediums, resulting in endless possibilities for creativity and innovation.
I find more artist now, industry representatives too, are looking for creatives to excel in more than one artistic channel. In our world now, being skilled in more than one field is vital to growing towards a path of success. By being multifaceted, you’re not limited by your skillset and are able to push the boundaries of what’s possible in any industry. Exploring new avenues for expression not only allows you to diversify your talents, but encourages others to pursue that versatility as well. Trying something new and taking every chance to grow in what you’re passionate about is what it means to be innovative.
