We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kadi Tsang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kadi below.
Kadi, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity thrives on constant cultivation. Stories bloom everywhere – the quiet conversations on park benches, the headlines that scream from the newspaper, and the rhythm of a bustling city street. It is about becoming a keen listener, absorbing the whispers of life through everyday interactions, books, music, or simply a walk through town. These are fragments of narratives waiting to be pieced together.
Once I have a draft of a story, the real exploration begins. I delve into the minds of my characters, asking myself a multitude of questions: What motivates them? What are their fears? What do they want? This analysis forms the foundation of my story. Yet, the true magic happens when I allow myself to play. When I write, the meticulously crafted framework meets the free flow of creativity, like a vibrant orchestra of ideas coming together. I let the characters and the plot interact, weaving together the threads of analysis and inspiration.
Inevitably, creative wells run dry at times. When this happens, I seek solace and rejuvenation from the vast landscape of human expression. Museums, concerts, theaters – all become portals to new worlds. Immersing myself in different artistic mediums reignites my creative spark, inspiring fresh perspectives and approaches.
By constantly seeking stories, actively listening, and nurturing the seeds of inspiration, I keep my creative garden flourishing, ready to produce new and captivating blooms.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a writer and director passionate about creating short films that explore social issues like aging, mental health, and the experiences of immigrants. My collaborations with various nonprofits have allowed me to tell stories often overlooked or misunderstood.
What truly fuels my creativity is the intricate tapestry of identity and human connection. Growing up in Asia, I learned the profound power of unspoken emotions – where meaning resides in the space between the lines. My films aim to bridge divides and foster empathy. I hope to dismantle stereotypes and create spaces for understanding, and with the power of art, spark conversations, challenge perspectives, and ultimately, create a more connected world.
Currently, I am co-directing a short film named “Bruce Bruce” with Katusha Jin, and executive produced by William Kwok of the Martial Arts Education Society. This film explores the themes of immigration and women’s empowerment. Starring former Miss Hong Kong Kayi Cheung and her daughter, “Bruce Bruce” is making its way through film festivals and is expected to be available to the public sometime next year.
Stay tuned for the upcoming release of “Bruce Bruce”!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The artistic path twists and turns, throwing revisions and self-doubt your way. Yet, the rewards for those who persevere are truly incredible. When inspiration dips and rejections sting, keep pushing forward. Embrace iteration – setbacks become opportunities to refine your craft. Keep creating, keep exploring, and keep putting your work out there.
Inspiration fuels creativity, and openness is the key to unlocking its potential. Don’t limit yourself! Explore different mediums, step outside your comfort zone, and embrace the unexpected connections you might find. Seek out diverse experiences, engage with people from different backgrounds, and challenge your own assumptions. The next spark of genius could ignite anywhere.
Finally, active listening is the bridge to understanding the human experience, the heart of artistic expression. Pay attention to the emotions simmering beneath the surface, the unspoken cues, and the whispers within conversations. Engage with the stories of others, ask thoughtful questions, and strive to truly grasp their perspectives. This not only deepens connections but enriches your life, all of which can inject invaluable depth and nuance into your creative work.
These three qualities work in powerful synergy. Persistence fuels the journey, openness expands your horizons, and active listening brings depth and meaning. They are the sparks that ignite creativity and propel one on a rewarding artistic adventure.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
The artistic journey thrives on collaboration, and I’m always looking for passionate storytellers to join forces with.
Whether you are a filmmaker, artist, or non-profit organization, we might be a great fit if you share this passion for social impact through artistic expression! Together, we can explore the potential of digital media or theater to bring these underrepresented narratives to life.
I am particularly interested in exploring digital media and theater as tools for storytelling. In the past, I have partnered with organizations to create short films that raise awareness about social issues, and I have also produced community art exhibitions.
If you are interested in exploring potential projects together, feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or send me an email. Let us turn our creative sparks into something powerful together!
