Meet Kai Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kai Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kai below.

Kai, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding my purpose as an artist has been far from a linear process, it’s taken many years, but I think it’s about exploring, growing, and staying true to your creative instincts. Remember that your purpose as an artist is a deeply personal and unique to you, and it may change and evolve as you continue to create and grow. For me starting my journey in music has really informed a lot of my process and decision making in my next chapter as an embroidery artist and fashion designer.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Kai Brown. I grew up in Sydney, Australia but have spent the last 15 years living and working in Los Angeles. My first career was as a Singer/Songwriter. I was lucky enough to make 4 solo albums under my own name and tour the world for over 10 years.

My journey as an Embroidery Artist/Designer begun 9 years ago. I was introduced to the Chainstitch Embrodery machine and the connection was instant. I found it very much like playing guitar but on a sewing machine.

I founded my brand Artists, Makers and Repairs (amR) in 2014 and the it’s been non stop ever since. I’m incredibly grateful for the journey to this point and I have had the chance to travel the world and collaborate with some of my favorite artists and designers.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Be fearless
2. Trust your intuition and work on finding YOUR voice.
3. Find mentors

There are lots of people that are going to have options about you and your art. I think it’s really important to seek out mentors who’ve walked the road before you. Be open, humble and ask lots of questions.

Along this path there are many people that will try to offer you advice. Just make sure these people are actuality living and walking a path that your aspiring to. Fear can play a big part in a lot of people’s opinions on how you should do things. Be mindful of this always.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The new Rick Ruban book The Creative Act: A Way of Being has affirmed a lot for me, as well as shown me lots of new ways to approach my process.

I’d recommended listening to the audio book. It’s incredible and offers so many insights for creatives at every level.
