We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kai Fischer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kai, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I believe my purpose was shaped long before I ever put words on a page. From a young age, I was driven by a desire to give voice to stories that had not yet been told. I fell in love with books and motion pictures early in my childhood — I still remember watching Steven Spielberg’s E.T. with my parents and friends, and later, discovering Michael Ende’s The NeverEnding Story. Born in 1973 in Frankfurt, Germany, I was eleven at the time, and those cinematic experiences opened a doorway to a world where imagination, emotion, and humanity lived side by side.
My greatest role models have always been filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg — artists who began their journeys with nothing more than a dream and an unwavering passion for storytelling. Spielberg’s early story has always stayed with me: as a young boy on one of the first Universal Studios tours in Los Angeles, he simply stepped off the tour vehicle and wandered through the studio lots on his own. Because he was just a kid, no one questioned him. It’s a humorous anecdote, but also a powerful reminder that boldness, curiosity, and courage can open doors that otherwise remain closed.
And now with my screenplay Lambada The Dance of Fate earning over 100 awards and selections across five continents — I am honored by how deeply this story has resonated across the globe.
But beyond the accolades, my purpose is clear. Cinema has never been just entertainment for me; it is a passport to empathy. It is a universal language capable of crossing borders, cultures, and generations. As storytellers, we carry both the privilege and responsibility of reminding the world of its shared humanity.
With my biopic film project, my ambition is to leave a lasting impact on the biographical drama genre by telling a deeply human story — one that carries emotional depth, historical resonance, and genuine authenticity. I want to create a film that touches audiences and sparks meaningful conversations.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an award-winning screenwriter, and at the heart of everything I do is a singular mission: to give voice to untapped and untold stories. Stories that matter. Stories that have been overlooked, forgotten, or buried beneath the noise of the world.
There are two defining days in every life: the day we are born, and the day we discover why. I have found my “why.” My purpose is not only to continue telling meaningful stories, but also to help illuminate the path for storytellers who are still searching for theirs. My work is rooted in empathy, truth, and the deep belief that cinema can serve as a bridge between cultures, generations, and lived experiences.
Over the past year, my screenplay Lambada The Dance of Fate has garnered extraordinary international acclaim. As I’ve mentioned, it has amassed over 107 prestigious accolades across five continents so far, including top honors from the Film Emmy Awards 2025, the Independent Golden Globe, the Independent Oscar Awards, the Film Grammy Awards, and the Cinematic Tony Awards of Broadway. I have even received the Lifetime Achievement Award in India twice — for my contribution to world cinema. This global recognition underscores the screenplay’s powerful storytelling and its remarkable impact on audiences and critics alike.
It has been honored in the categories Best Biographical Script and Best International Screenwriter, making it one of the most awarded biographical screenplays by a first-time screenwriter in history.
What Makes My Work Special
I am drawn to true stories that carry emotional depth and historical meaning — stories that reveal the humanity behind headlines and the soul behind a public image. And perhaps no story embodies this more than that of Loalwa Braz Vieira, the legendary lead singer of Kaoma.
Her voice — sensual, powerful, and instantly recognizable — brought the global hit “La Lambada” to life. At one point in time, it was among the twenty most-heard voices on the planet. Everyone knows the song.
But almost no one knows the truth behind it:
-That the music was plagiarized.
-That Loalwa Braz was never given the recognition she deserved.
-And that her life ended in a deeply tragic and mysterious way.
This biopic film project uncovers the real story behind the voice the world danced to — a story shaped by adversity, destiny, injustice, and the rhythm of a dance that ultimately changed everything.
A Film That Merges Music, History & Emotion
One of the most powerful moments in the film takes place on the night of November 9, 1989 — the fall of the Berlin Wall. In a pivotal scene, thousands of people from both East and West Germany pour into the streets, united in one emotional outburst of freedom. They dance the Lambada together — strangers embracing, laughing, crying, celebrating all at once.
In that moment, the dance becomes more than music.
It becomes a symbol of joy, liberation, and the first breath of the Cold War’s end.
This single scene captures what excites me most about the art of storytelling: the power to connect personal stories to global history, to show how one song, one woman, one cultural phenomenon can influence entire generations.
What’s Next
As I move forward, my brand remains anchored in authenticity and emotional resonance. I will continue exploring stories that challenge silence, celebrate human resilience, and remind us of our shared humanity. Lambada The Dance of Fate is just the beginning.
My goal is to build a body of work that leaves a meaningful imprint on the cinematic landscape — stories that stay with audiences not because they shouted the loudest, but because they whispered something their hearts couldn’t ignore.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, three qualities have shaped my journey more than anything else: bold curiosity, emotional truth, and unwavering authenticity. These qualities have guided not only the stories I choose to tell but the person I strive to be as a storyteller.
1. Bold Curiosity
My first and perhaps most defining trait is a fearless curiosity — the kind that pushes you to step into places you’ve never been, simply because something inside you says you belong there. This is a quality I have always admired in Spielberg. As a young boy on a Universal Studios tour, he quietly stepped off the tour tram and wandered through the studio lots as if he were meant to be there. No pass. No permission. Just pure belief, curiosity, and courage.
That story has always resonated deeply with me. It taught me early in life that sometimes the door to your destiny doesn’t open by invitation — sometimes you must walk toward it before anyone notices you’re ready to enter. Throughout my own journey, bold curiosity has led me to unexpected rooms, important conversations, and opportunities that would have remained invisible had I not dared to explore beyond the obvious.
My advice:
Cultivate curiosity. Follow the questions that keep you awake at night. Explore the spaces that intimidate you. Curiosity is the seed of every great story.
2. Emotional Truth
The second quality that has shaped my creative path is a relentless commitment to emotional truth. I am drawn to stories that carry a heartbeat — narratives that reveal the extraordinary within ordinary lives, that confront silence, vulnerability, and resilience.
I do not chase trends; I chase truth. Emotional truth is what makes a story stay with you long after the credits roll. It is what turns a film into a mirror, a companion, a memory.
My advice:
Learn to listen — not just to others, but to yourself. Observe people. Study emotions. Pay attention to the quiet moments where truth reveals itself. The best storytellers are the ones who see beneath the surface.
3. Unwavering Authenticity
The third skill is authenticity — the courage to tell stories that matter, not stories that are fashionable. My compass has always pointed toward purpose, not popularity. I pursue narratives that will still matter ten years from now, not just ten minutes after a premiere.
Authenticity means staying loyal to your vision even when the world is loud, fast, and full of shortcuts. It means choosing projects that whisper to the soul rather than shout for attention.
My advice:
Protect your voice. Don’t let the noise of the industry drown out your truth. Your authenticity is your signature — the one thing no one can replicate.
What guides my artistic choices today is the same force that inspired me as an eleven-year-old watching E.T. and The NeverEnding
Story: the belief that stories have the power to shape us, save us, and remind us of who we are.
My ambition is to create films that breathe — films that linger not because they demanded attention, but because they touched something people didn’t know they needed. If you are early in your journey, nurture your curiosity, your truth, and your authenticity. With these three qualities, you won’t just create stories — you’ll create meaning.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I just had the privilege of presenting my biopic film project to several Hollywood production companies in Los Angeles.
In this industry, you don’t simply knock on the door of Paramount and ask if an executive has a moment — access is earned through trust, relationships, and introductions one door at a time. The numerous awards and selections my screenplay has received worldwide played a vital role in opening those doors. They made people in Hollywood stop, take notice, and truly listen.
Every year, tens of thousands of new screenplays circulate through Hollywood, and only a tiny fraction ever reach actual decision-makers. To have advanced from being just one script among many to real conversations at the decision stage is something I value deeply.
However, no final decision regarding a producer or production company has been made yet. Bringing Lambada The Dance of Fate to the big screen is my mission, and I believe in this story with every fiber of my being. I remain focused, patient, and fully open to the right partnership.
Every serious offer is welcome, and I am genuinely interested in connecting with producers who feel inspired by this untold true story and see its cinematic potential. Producers who wish to collaborate or learn more can reach me directly through my profiles on IMDb or FilmFreeway.
