We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kai King. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kai below.
Hi Kai, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I did a lot of soul searching away from the way things were while I was growing up that really negatively affected my self image and made me self conscious. Going to therapy was a start, CBT, specifically for this issue. Also surrounding myself with people who are encouraging.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a musician, first and foremost. I have exciting things planned for the fall, including a rebrand. I am graduations in December and then will hopfeullly find I job I really enjoy in the industry as well as where I want to settle down.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Music discovery. Just today I was thinking back to some music I discovered when I went to Berklee at age 16 and how learning those songs in ensamble still shape my artistry to date, artists like Stevie Wonder and Aaliyah. Secondly, the quality of being at ease. In the music and entertainment business there’s a lot of disappointment, a lot of competition, and lots of comparison. It’s very important to be able to make peace with you’re vision and kind of put on blinders. Getting a degree in the Creative and Entertainment Industries with a minor in Music Business as week I spending 5 months in Los Angeles and 5 months in Madrid, equipped me with hand on experience and priceless knowledge about the field I want to be in professionally .
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I love this question. Two books that help me self discover in terms of gender an sexuality and Bread, Blood, and Poetry by Adrian Rich, and Gender Trouble by Judith Butler .
