Meet Kailah Orr

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kailah Orr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kailah, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resiliency comes from the lessons that were woven into me by the strong black women in my life. My mom, grandma, great-grandma and aunties are my strength. They taught me how to move through the world with grace, even in the face of adversity, and to do so with unwavering faith in the blessings that are sure to come. Their righteous indignation, their attitude, the idea of never settling for less than what is deserved—has empowered me to not only persevere but to rise with purpose and intention, knowing that each challenge is just a stepping stone to something greater.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’ve been deeply passionate about building authentic communities and creating spaces where Black women can connect, grow, and thrive. I founded BlackGirlMixer (BGM) with the vision of bringing like-minded women together through curated experiences that foster empowerment, joy, and meaningful relationships. What started as a small gathering has grown into a collective that is reshaping how Black women in Las Vegas—and beyond—find community.

BlackGirlMixer is unique because we focus on creating spaces that balance wellness, business development, and social connection. It’s a platform where women can support each other, whether it’s through a job connection, a collaborative project, or simply sharing personal stories. I think what makes BGM so special is that it’s not just about networking—it’s about showing up as your full self and having others show up for you in return.

Professionally, I manage every aspect of BGM—event planning, funding, outreach, and content creation. What excites me most is the diversity of experiences we create. We’ve hosted everything from wellness walks, family-friendly outings, and crafting sessions to brunches and networking. These experiences give women a chance to build both their personal and professional lives while knowing they’re part of something bigger.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey. First is self-awareness—knowing who I am, what I want, and how I plan to achieve it. This has been essential in guiding my decisions and staying true to my purpose. My advice for those early in their journey is to invest time in understanding yourself deeply. The clearer you are about your goals, the more aligned your actions will be.

Second is my ability to connect with people. I’ve always leaned into conversations with anyone, which has opened doors I wouldn’t have expected. Building authentic relationships is key—not just for your own growth but for creating opportunities for others as well. I encourage people to step outside their comfort zones and actively network with intention and curiosity.

Lastly, my ability to read the room has been invaluable. It’s not just about being in spaces but knowing whether those spaces align with who you are and your vision. Sometimes, the best decision is to step back if it doesn’t feel right. For those starting out, develop the skill to assess whether a situation is beneficial for your growth or worth investing your time and energy in.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely! I’m always looking to partner with individuals and organizations that are dedicated to creating intentional, exciting, and remarkable experiences for Black women. My goal is to provide spaces where we can explore new opportunities, amplify our voices, and celebrate our accomplishments. I’m particularly interested in collaborating with Black woman-owned startups, wellness brands, and public relations managers who are focused on making meaningful impacts.

If you’re passionate about creating inclusive experiences and elevating Black women, let’s connect. You can reach out to me at info@blackgirlmixer.com or via social media at @blackgirlmixer. Let’s build something amazing together!
