Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kailynn Ford. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kailynn, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
There have been many times when I was the only Black person or the only woman in the room. It can be uncomfortable at times, but in those moments, I remind myself of who I am. Being a Black woman does not define me; it merely describes me. I am a strong, talented, and resilient person who has overcome many obstacles. I am smart, kind, and loving. These affirmations and many others empower me to walk into a room with confidence. I possess a strong, positive mindset that allows me to thrive wherever I go.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a first-year law student at Southern University Law Center. After graduating, I aspire to work with children to ensure that all their needs are met. Driven by my passion for helping young people, I authored a book titled Perfectly Imperfect. This story is designed to teach teens and young adults how to overcome life’s challenges. I love helping others recognize their potential, and I am proud to pursue a career that allows me to do this on a larger scale.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that I believe are most important in shaping who I am today are patience, pruning, and resilience. Great things take time, and the more worthwhile the opportunity, the longer it takes to build a solid foundation. Pruning is essential for any type of growth; in order to receive something new, you must let go of the past. The ability to let go can set you apart from others. Patience and pruning together foster resilience, which in turn enables you to handle challenges and hold on to things you never imagined you could.
One piece of advice I would give to everyone is to keep pushing forward. Many times, we may get hurt while working on something significant. No matter what challenges arise, you must choose to win wounded, even when facing adversity.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
