We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kait Scott a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kait , we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
There is no “quick fix” or “life hack” for mental health. Overcoming mental health challenges is not easy, it is some of the most difficult work that a person can do, but it is worth it. I have learned the importance of caring for mental health and prioritizing it as highly as my physical health. I have learned how to become kinder & more patient with myself by intentionally carving out time for self care. For me, self care looks like routine, movement, journaling, healthy eating, and a lot of mindfulness. Being grounded in the present moment is a key factor to overcoming mental health challenges.
I have faced a lot of difficulties with anxiety, depression & ADHD over my life. These challenges have fed one another at certain times in my life leading to a cycle of ADHD paralysis, which would induce anxiety & panic, then inevitably lead to depression feeling like I would never be able to get through the challenges of ADHD & anxiety. Luckily, I have an incredible therapist who has helped me gain insight into why these challenges show up & how I can implement strategies to cope with them.
For me, it really helps to focus my energy & attention outside of the problems I have going on. By focusing my energy outside of the problems, they seem a lot less scary. I am able to lean into gratitude & remember the power I have, the ability I have to choose the life I want to create.
This isn’t always perfect, a lot of times it is not. It’s not about getting things right, or perfect, ever. It is about trying, it’s about caring for yourself enough to realize that you have nothing to lose by choosing yourself & everything to lose by staying in the dark places. It’s about accepting that what is in your control & letting go of what is not. It is about being okay with how difficult the process of healing can be, remembering it is a process & not a linear timeline. It is okay if your needs waiver, it is okay to ask for help, it is okay to set boundaries. You have to do what is best for you so you do not lose the person you are meant to be.
My support system is the backbone of my mental health self care, I feel really grateful for the love & abundance that exists in my life, it helps me feel seen even on my worst days. I have learned that sometimes reaching out to your support system for help can look like checking in on them, asking how they are doing, nurturing the relationships in your life that fill up your cup.
Mental health is a really complex subject that I’ve had opportunities to learn a lot about from various perspectives. I am a social worker which has given me the opportunity to work with a lot of incredible humans. The work I did really helped me gain insight on all of the ways mental health shows up in life. I have learned so many lessons over my years working in the field & through my own struggles with mental health, those lessons carry me through. The biggest thing I learned is the importance of kindness & compassion to yourself & others. You may never know how far kindness & compassion can take someone, the way that smiling at a stranger can turn their day around or restore some of their hope. I’ve learned that it is important not to overlook the “small” things in life, to practice gratitude for any & every thing that helps carry you through.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Pips Bakery is ALL about self care & treating yourself. Our motto is “happy tummy, happy mind” because we know the importance of caring for your wholistic health. Opening my home bakery has been an absolute dream & the biggest act of self love I could imagine. I had to name it after my favorite girl in the world, Pippa. My sweet emotional support dog; she’s never met a person that didn’t make her butt wiggle!
5% of every purchase at Pips is donated to National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) to support resources, because I wish everyone had a therapist as good as mine.
I have a gluten & dairy intolerance, but I also have a massive sweet tooth. It’s not always easy to find delicious & consistent desserts that are both gluten & dairy free- so I make sure to go absolutely crazy with mine. I focus on delicious classics but each month I rotate an experimental menu! My classic menu includes chocolate chip cookies, birthday cake cookies, sugar cookies & blueberry muffins. My experimental menu features new recipes, styles, and/or flavor combinations I am testing! Always gluten & dairy free!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Balance.
It’s really easy to forget that rest is productive. It’s also easy to mistake unhealthy habits for rest. Make time to be alone & remember to respect your own boundaries!
2. Joy
The reason we do what we love- to feel joy. When you choose to peruse something you dream about, you cannot let yourself forget about the joy that you felt before you started.
3. Celebrate
Don’t discount any success, none of them are small. You deserve to celebrate & be proud of every win, just like you would celebrate others. As I always say, you deserve treats.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Collaborating with others is a huge love of mine & I am always looking for ways to connect! I really love being involved in the community & bringing people together.
I would love to partner with small business owners in LA that encourage & support self love.
I am all about treating yourself & indulging where you can, because you deserve it.
Let’s connect via email or on Instagram. I am located in LA & love to make new connections!
