Meet Kaitlan Farrior

We were lucky to catch up with Kaitlan Farrior recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kaitlan, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.

When I encounter naysayers and critics who try to bring me down, it actually motivates me even more to succeed. I see them as people who have tried and failed, or who never dared to dream big enough themselves, so they try to impose their limitations on others. For me, their doubts become a challenge—a challenge to prove them wrong and to prove to myself what I’m capable of.

When I write and sell books, it’s not just about achieving my own goals; it’s about showing those skeptics that I can do it despite their negativity. Their disbelief fuels my determination. It’s like they inadvertently push me forward every time they say I can’t. I use their doubt as a reminder to stay focused, keep pushing, and never give up.

Persistence, for me, is about staying true to my vision and not letting anyone else’s negativity derail me. Instead, I let it strengthen my resolve. The journey isn’t always easy, but every setback or criticism just reinforces my determination to succeed. I believe in myself and my dreams, and that’s what keeps me going, no matter what others might say.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a 22-year-old college student with a passion for understanding human behavior and society, which led me to triple major in Psychology, Sociology, and Africana Studies. Beyond academics, I’m deeply immersed in the world of literature as an author, playwright, and poet.

My journey into writing began at the age of 8 when I decided to put my thoughts onto paper, eventually publishing three short hardcover books by the time I was 10. Since then, writing has been a constant and beautiful part of my life.

Recently, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to expand into playwriting. Over the past two years, I’ve written five plays as part of the Quickscripts program at North Carolina State University. This experience has not only honed my craft but also provided me with a platform to explore different aspects of myself and connect with audiences through storytelling.

What excites me most about my work is the ability to delve deep into themes that resonate with people, whether through psychology, sociology, or the cultural insights of Africana Studies. I love the process of learning about myself and others through literature and using that understanding to create meaningful connections with readers and audiences alike.

Looking ahead, I’m enthusiastic about continuing to grow as a writer and exploring new avenues to share my stories. Whether it’s through upcoming plays, new literary works, or engaging with communities, I’m eager to expand my impact and inspire others through my art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey so far, three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, authenticity, and self-care.

Firstly, resilience has been crucial. Writing and pursuing creative endeavors inevitably involves setbacks and criticism. What’s important is not avoiding failure but bouncing back from it stronger. My advice would be to embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Keep pushing forward, keep learning from mistakes, and let each setback fuel your determination to improve.

Secondly, authenticity has been key. Writing from my own experiences and perspectives has allowed me to connect more deeply with readers and audiences. It’s tempting to follow trends or conform to others’ expectations, but staying true to yourself and your unique voice is what sets you apart. My advice here is to trust in your own story and share it authentically. Don’t be afraid to be different or to challenge norms—your authenticity will resonate with others.

Lastly, self-care and self-love have been vital for sustaining my creativity and mental well-being. Writing can be emotionally demanding, and taking care of yourself allows you to continue producing meaningful work. My advice is to prioritize self-care practices that replenish your energy and inspire creativity, whether it’s through meditation, exercise, spending time in nature, or simply taking breaks when needed.

For those starting their own journey, I would say: keep going, even when it feels tough. Embrace the learning that comes from setbacks and not always being “in the loop.” Don’t be afraid to stand out and be yourself—your uniqueness is your strength. And always remember to take care of yourself along the way; nurturing your own well-being will fuel your creativity and resilience in the long run.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely! I’m always open to collaborating and partnering with passionate individuals who share a love for writing, storytelling, and exploring topics like mental health and social issues through creative mediums. Whether it’s co-authoring a book, writing a play, starting an organization, or developing programs related to writing and mental health, I’m eager to connect and contribute.
