We recently connected with Kaitlyn Bui and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaitlyn, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I’m all about “fake it ‘til you make it.” For me, that means being so prepared that confidence just naturally falls into place. When I’m fishing, I always make sure I look the part—not just so people take me seriously, but so I can feel like I belong. It puts me in the right headspace, like, “Yeah, I can totally do this.” But let’s be real—looking the part is only half the battle. You’ve got to act the part too.
When those nervous or anxious feelings creep in, I just put them in a box for now and remind myself, whatever I’m scared of? It’s already out there waiting for me. So, I might as well meet it—but on my own terms. That’s why having the right mindset is everything. It really shapes how you handle whatever life throws at you.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m an undercover crab fisherman—undercover meaning I might not look like your typical fisherman, but it’s a huge passion of mine. It all started back in late 2020, when everyone was stuck at home. As much as I love my brothers, I just couldn’t handle being around them 24/7. So, I started taking long walks on the beach to get some space. One day, I saw some fishermen reeling in crabs, and I was instantly hooked. That same day, I went home and binge-watched every YouTube video I could find to teach myself how to crab.
The best part of picking up this hobby wasn’t just finally catching something after four trips—it was sharing that excitement with my friends and family. That connection made the whole experience even more special.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three things that have been most important in my journey are grit, kindness, and just being willing to try. Grit is everything when passion and perseverance start to blur, especially when you’re chasing success. You’ve got to keep pushing, even when it feels hard. Kindness—especially to yourself—is huge, too. Life can be tough, so being kind to yourself helps you stay flexible and roll with the punches. And honestly, just trying, even when you’re not sure how it’ll go, is so important. You never know where that first step will take you.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The people who’ve helped me the most are the vloggers who came before me and made it normal for anyone to feel free to create content. There’s no real manual for handling the highs and lows of content creating, so I really admire those who are honest about what goes on behind the scenes. I sometimes have trouble figuring out my own feelings, so seeing others be candid about their day-to-day struggles really resonates with me. It’s comforting to know no one is alone and that others are navigating the same challenges.
