We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kaitlyn Eve. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kaitlyn below.
Kaitlyn , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
My moto has always been to “do it anyway.” I often feel like an imposter, like I’m not as talented as my peers or haven’t contributed as much. At the end of the day, who cares? Are you doing something you love? Are you learning and growing? Are you enjoying the process? Great! It’s okay to get those feelings of self-doubt but the most important thing is not to let them stop you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Kaitlyn Eve and I am a singer-songwriting and pharmacist from New York City. For as long as I can remember, I have been endlessly fascinated by both creativity and science, and I have been lucky enough to find paths that nurture both passions. As a college undergrad, I was double major in music and chemistry. Upon graduating, I moved to Baltimore to pursue my Doctorate of Pharmacy degree. Shortly after moving to Baltimore, I got hired as a piano player and singer at a Dueling Piano bar, and I have managed to carve time for both passions, music and pharmacy, through school, residency, and now in my permanent career as a pharmacist! During the pandemic when the world and live performances shut down, I turned inward and started writing songs again. Since then, I have continued to develop my own voice in songwriting, recording and producing my own music and performing my own songs around New York City! I am excited to have just released my newest song on August 23.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, the three most important qualities that have been impactful in my journey have been curiosity, reliability, and passion.
Curiosity – the best way to continue to grow is being endlessly curious. There is such benefit in understanding that you still have more to learn. It forces you to explore new areas that you are less familiar with, ask questions and observe your peers to learn from them, and develop relationship with mentors who can guide you to the next step in your journey. There are no stupid questions and the more you can learn, the more you can grow.
Reliability – at the end of the day, people want to know if you will show up for them. You can be the most talented artist in the world, but if you constantly fall back on your commitments, people aren’t going to be inclined to hire you. You can get a lot further in life by responding to e-mails, showing up, and being a hard worker over just being talented.
Passion – the music industry is not the easiest to navigate. There are huge swings of highs and lows, achievements and disappointments. Turning inward and remembering where the passion was born from can keep you going through the lows so that the highs feel that much sweeter.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I personally have always been the type of person who goes all in on their strengths. That’s not to say it’s not important to also be well rounded. I think there is benefit with knowing the basics of a broad range of skills, especially as it comes to the music industry, so you have awareness of the things going on around you. But there are only so many hours in the day! I would rather spend my time developing the skills that I am MOST passionate about and surrounding myself with people who are the experts in their area.
I think the recording process is an amazing example of this. I spent my time growing as a singer, songwriter and piano player. I know the basics of some DAWs so I can lay down a rough demo, for example, but I don’t have the desire to learn the ins and outs of recording / mixing / mastering music. And while I can record vocals and piano, I would rather hire a drummer or bassist who can play something really cool over laying down a basic drum beat or use a patch. I always want to work with someone who has devoted their time developing their unique skill. Collaboration is key =)
