Meet Kaitlyn Unger

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaitlyn Unger a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kaitlyn, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome is something I’ve wrestled with throughout my journey as a designer and business owner. I would even venture to say that imposter syndrome isn’t really something you overcome, but rather, you learn to face it head-on.

For a long time, I’ve doubted whether I was truly skilled enough to succeed, especially after starting my business during the uncertainty of the pandemic. What helps me face my imposter syndrome is a combination of faith, support from my loved ones, and a commitment to continuous learning.

My Christian faith has always been a source of strength for me, reminding me that my purpose is to glorify God and serve others. This perspective helped shift my focus from self-doubt to the impact I could have on others. Additionally, the support of my family and friends, who believe in me even when I don’t, is invaluable. They have encouraged me to keep going, even when I felt discouraged.

Finally, I made a commitment to invest in myself and my business. I enrolled in the Web Designer Academy, which not only helped me with growing my business strategy but also connected me with a community of like-minded professionals. Through this, I realized that everyone has moments of doubt, but pushing through those moments is what leads to growth.

Imposter syndrome hasn’t completely disappeared, but I’ve learned to see it as a sign that I’m stepping out of my comfort zone and growing. It’s a reminder to keep learning, keep improving, and keep believing in the value I bring to my clients and my business.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

You got it! I am the founder and designer behind KTU Designs LLC where I specialize in creating stunning websites and compelling content for small to mid-sized businesses. What excites me most about my work is the opportunity to empower business owners with the tools they need to succeed online. Whether it’s through a custom website design, SEO optimization, or crafting a brand’s visual identity, my goal is to help my clients attract their dream clients and grow their businesses with confidence.

What I find most special about what I do is the deep connection I build with each of my clients. Being a solopreneur, I’m involved in every aspect of the design process, which allows me to tailor each project to the unique needs and vision of my clients. It’s incredibly rewarding to see their excitement when they see their ideas come to life, and knowing that I’ve played a part in their business journey is what keeps me passionate about my work.

Currently, I’m focused on expanding my SEO services, which has been an exciting journey. I’ve developed three distinct SEO offerings—SEO Assessment, SEO Set-Up, and Monthly SEO services—each designed to help businesses improve their online presence in a way that suits their specific needs. These services have been a game-changer for many of my clients, and I’m thrilled to see the impact they’re having.

Additionally, I’m passionate about sharing resources that I’ve found valuable, such as Termageddon, a platform that helps businesses stay compliant with privacy laws. Their customer service has been excellent, and I’m proud to be an affiliate.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey, there are three key qualities that have been most impactful: resilience, a commitment to continuous learning, and the ability to connect with others.

Starting and growing a business is full of challenges, and resilience has been essential. There have been moments of doubt, setbacks, and unexpected turns, but staying resilient has allowed me to push through and continue moving forward. My advice for those early in their journey is to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow. Every setback is a lesson in disguise, and building resilience will help you navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.

The design and digital marketing industries are constantly evolving, and staying on top of the latest trends and tools is crucial. For me, investing in my education, like enrolling in the Web Designer Academy, was a game-changer. I recommend making continuous learning a priority, whether through formal education, online courses, or even learning from others in your field. Stay curious, and never stop seeking out new knowledge that can enhance your skills and your business.

Lastly, building strong relationships with clients, peers, and mentors has been incredibly valuable. The connections I’ve made have not only provided support and guidance but have also opened doors to new opportunities. My advice is to network genuinely and build relationships based on trust and mutual respect. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, and be open to both giving and receiving help.

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who is passionate about their business and understands the value of a strong online presence. They are typically small to mid-sized business owners who are in the first five years of their journey and are ready to invest in their brand to take it to the next level. They might be entrepreneurs, creatives, or service providers who are eager to attract their dream clients and grow their business.

What makes someone an ideal client for me is their commitment to collaboration and open communication. I love working with clients who are clear about their vision but also trust the design process and are open to new ideas. They value quality and are excited to invest in their brand, knowing that the work we do together will have a lasting impact on their business.

Another key characteristic of my ideal client is a desire for long-term growth. They aren’t just looking for a quick fix; they’re interested in building a sustainable online presence that will serve them for years to come. Whether it’s through custom website design, SEO optimization, or brand development, they see our partnership as an investment in their future success.

Ultimately, my ideal client is someone who is ready to take their business to the next level and is looking for a partner who can help them do just that. They’re passionate, collaborative, and committed to creating something truly special.
