Meet Kaiya Montague

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kaiya Montague. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kaiya below.

Kaiya , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

I’ve learned that just being confident in who you are is most important. It sounds cliche but you should walk into every room like you own it. When you are authentic to yourself and who God called you to be then you’ll always be effective in life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a Dj out of Michigan. I grew up in Inkster,Michigan and went to school in Westland. I am of Jamaican descent so I feel like that translates a lot into how I play music. I love what I do because I can really change the mood of people through music and dance. I feel that is one of the most exciting part about dj-in along with letting music take you back in time. There is nothing better than seeing everyone on the same frequency and watching them just live and enjoy that moment. I am focused on continuing to perfect my craft and grow. I have a lot of new things coming up including new merch, new music, and more business ventures that I will share soon. I will also be starting Dj youth classes very soon.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities that I learned were most impactful were confidence, practice, and patience. It’s so important to be confident and to trust yourself when you are Djin. That confidence will come with practice and time. There are so many ways to get practice. Whether you are doing it at home, opening up for another Dj, or for family and friends. The more hours you put in on studying your craft will make you confident in your gift. It is also important to be patient in your progress. As long as you are putting in the work the opportunities will come. Be supportive more than anything.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

When I am feeling overwhelmed the first thing I do is put down my phone. Our phones are our biggest distraction and I still struggle with that today and have to remind myself to take a break. I do things that make me feel grounded so I can center myself. I go to the gym, meditate, or listen to music. I also surround myself with my family if I feel overwhelmed. I enjoy being around my loved ones and experiencing the true love I get from them, it helps be feel grounded.
