Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kale Batty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kale, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I grew up with parent’s who struggled with mental health and addiction. Naturally I fell into line. I used drugs with both my parent’s. Fast forward 15 Years 1 marriage and 5 kids and multiple incarcerations. I had just served 2 years and got out. I was mortified that I was going to go right back to what I was doing. I confided in my mother and had a breakdown with her about how absolutely upset I was with myself and where I was at in the world. Within the next 15 minutes the two of us are in her room shooting up heroin and Im on my way back to salt lake to link up with my Biological father with money and Drugs. Still distraught I tried confiding myself in him and had the same reaction. He could have cared less and I realized that this was what my world was. For the first time in my life I KNEW THAT THIS WAS NOT WHAT I WAS MEANT TO BE!!! I left the prostitutes motel that my father was staying at and had my grandparents drive me to The Other Side Academy. Their I found a way out and knew that it worked. From that day forward I knew that I could help others in similar situations.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At The Other Side Village, we’re building more than just homes — we’re creating a supportive, intentional community for people emerging from chronic homelessness. Our mission is to provide a place where residents can heal, rebuild their lives, and rediscover a sense of purpose and belonging.
As Coaches, our role goes far beyond traditional case management. We walk alongside Village residents as mentors, advocates, and partners in personal growth. What makes our work so special is the deeply human, relational approach we take — we focus on trust, dignity, and long-term connection rather than quick fixes. Whether it’s helping someone navigate mental health challenges, reconnect with family, or pursue meaningful work, we support residents in defining and pursuing their own vision of a thriving life.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Accountability first and foremost. I had to finally take personal accountability for exactly what I had done to myself and others. Second, Doing the right thing doesn’t always feel good; but you still do it! You show up in this world and you do what is right, regardless if its hard or not. Last but not least would be Grace. Every one deserves to be treated with kindness. Situations deserve love and caring, with accountability and standing up for what is right and giving everyone a second shot. Including myself!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
My mother just passed away, and we had a unique family dynamic to say the least. But with her passing it all makes sense to me. This path that I was born into (and chose to continue to live for quite a time) used to fill me with fear, anger and confusion. Often taking a victim stance point when times were tough. But I learned to never give up, how to make things right, how to have empathy for someone going through hard times (not as a concept but through lived experience) and to love this world around me.
