We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kalonji Kadima a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kalonji, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my parents. My dad traveled from Democratic Republic of Congo to the US on a school scholarship and got himself established. 2 years later my mom traveled with 5 children on her own to join my father in Wisconsin. I draw inspiration and my resilience from them because seeing and knowing what they had to endure to make a way for our family is remarkable. They are my true heros.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a studio owner as well as artist, producer and engineer at KP Platinum Sound Studios. I work with all kinds of artists in San Diego and neighboring cities. I work with novice, up and coming artists as well as established artists. I produce all types of beats for various genres and am always looking to work with new artsts.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
On my journey I learned that I had to be open to new ideas and be patient when doing so. Not all artists are created equal so I learned to deal with each artist differently so that they get my undivided attention. I’ve learned that my approach when working in the studio should always be fluid so that I’ll continually be a sponge to keel learning and coming up with new ideas. My advice for people that are planning to run a recording studio is to always have an open mind, because artists are sensitive to their craft and just want their talent to be nurtured. Focus on the sound… that KP Platinum Sound.
My moto that I go by: F.O.C.U.S
F – ollow
O – one
C – ourse
U – ntil
S – successful
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
A good friend of mine from high school that was friends with my older brother was very helpful and essential in my journey to be working in the field that I’m in. Grammy nominated producer/engineer Chad “C-Note” Roper really helped me out with my craft. He was able to give me some hands-on training in working with Pro Tools (a music recording DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)) that truly helped me to shape the sound coming out of KP Platinum Sound Studios.
