Meet Kalyn Jacobs

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalyn Jacobs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalyn below.

Kalyn , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my faith. My mom instilled in me and my sisters that we can do anything we set our mind to accomplish. I’ve gone through my ups and downs in life and even in my darkest days, I’ve never lost hope in my ability to persevere and become the best version of myself. Some goals might be hard and take a little longer depending life’s circumstances, but at the end of the day I never let myself believe they’re unattainable.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a cinematographer and photographer— I started taking photos when I was in high school of friends and family. But I really fell in love with motion picture in college. I was inspired after watching “The Holiday” to study and pursue a career in film. I remember listening to my professor breakdown how scenes were shot and how lighting and camera movements can take a scene through a gamut of emotions. And at that point I knew I wanted to be a Cinematographer. I made it my mission to create emotional visual experiences. No matter the medium, I want people to feel emotionally connected to the images I capture.
When it comes cinematography, I love shooting dramas, slice of life and anything mind bending. I have yet to get my hand on a sapphic sci-fi script yet, but I’m manifesting it into orbit.
Photography tends to be more of a playground for me and a means to connect with people and the world around me. I shoot a lot of portraits, landscape photography and over the last few years of climbers in the outdoors.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities I believe were most impactful in my journey were adaptability, humility and drive. Every set back I’ve faced, I needed to adapt to the situation, humble myself because there was a lesson to be learned and keep driving forward. For anyone that’s embarking on a new journey, trust the process. Chasing dreams are hard and demand for us to level up and grow into different versions of ourselves— each stronger and wiser than the last. As the levels get hard to clear, take a pause to humble yourself, adapt to your circumstances and keep driving forward.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am looking to collaborate with people right now. Like most people in the film industry, I’m definitely feeling the burn of the slow down in work. However, I still have a such a desire to create. I really want to get back to doing conceptualized photoshoots with models and sfx make-up artists; I’m always open to working with writer/directors that want to collaborate on a weekend short film or even a spec shoot. I’m pretty open to making new connections and am pretty active on instagram should any be interested in reaching out to collaborate.
