Meet Kambua Chema

We were lucky to catch up with Kambua Chema recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kambua, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience in photography is rooted in my profound love for creating images and capturing moments that tell a story. This passion was solidified by a deeply personal experience: the discovery of a photograph my late father took of me on my first birthday, sitting on the bonnet of a car and holding a camera. For years, I searched for this cherished image, which I had carried with me when I moved to the States for college. Last year, driven by determination, I finally uncovered it in an album stored away. On the back, alongside the date, were the words “photographer.” This moment reaffirmed what I’ve always believed—I was destined to be a photographer. It’s this sense of purpose, combined with the joy of creation, that fuels my resilience and keeps me pursuing my passion, no matter the challenges.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a Chicago-based photographer and instructor specializing in corporate headshots, portraits and branding. I strive to capture the beautiful, authentic moments that define us. My photography is rooted in connection—I aim to create images that resonate and inspire by reflecting the true essence of the people I photograph.

Over 20 years ago, I picked up a film camera, and that moment changed my life. Since then, my fascination with people and their stories has fuelled my passion for photography. Whether I’m crafting a powerful headshot, capturing the personality of a portrait, or teaching photography, my goal is always the same: to enhance how people feel about themselves through images that reveal their unique personalities and strengths.

Joy is my superpower. It infuses my work, allowing me to bring energy, authenticity, and connection to every project. Whether I’m photographing a corporate executive, a family portrait, or a vibrant event, I approach each moment with care, creativity, and a focus on storytelling.

Photography, for me, is more than an art—it’s a bridge. It transcends boundaries and reveals the extraordinary within the everyday. Through my lens, I continue to explore the world, creating meaningful connections and sharing the stories that make us human.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Joie de vivre
2. Empathy
3. Resilience

Do what you love, build connections, keep an open heart and expect nothing.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My father was my greatest influence, always making me feel like Superwoman. His daily lessons taught me to see the world as full of goodness—a bubble I’ve loved living in. Losing him nearly a year ago shook my world, but I find comfort in my husband, family, and friends. His wisdom inspires me every day: Love what you do, find a way to make money doing it, and you’ll never work a day in your life. Still working on the making-money part, but I’m embracing joy in everything I do—just like he taught me.
