We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kamilah Campbell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamilah, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from years of rejection and being told “no.” Believe it or not, being rejected, just made me want to reach even higher when it comes to my goals. I remember years ago, I reached out to a buyer of a well-known retailer to inquire about a wholesaling opportunity. The buyer sent me back an email asking to see my linesheet followed by a request to send in jewelry samples. I was so excited about the opportunity because at that point I had only been in business for 5 years. Two weeks later I received my samples back with the answer of no. Of course, that wasn’t what I wanted to hear, but I later realized that rejection happens for a reason and that made me hit the pavement for opportunities even harder.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Kamilah Campbell and I’m the founder and jewelry designer of The Pink Locket. The Pink Locket originally started as a creative outlet to my corporate career. I learned to design jewelry at 15 and rediscovered my love for it in my mid-twenties around the 2008 recession. The Pink Locket is dedicated to crafting contemporary and minimalist jewelry that’s more than just an accessory – it’s a statement of empowerment. All of our jewelry metals are nickel-free and hypoallergenic, ensuring that your comfort is as important to us as your style.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most impactful qualities in my journey were not overthinking, knowing when to ask for help and discipline. My advice is to go with your gut feeling, over analyzing just brings anxiety or makes you not take action at all. Learn from your mistakes fast and move on. There will be days you aren’t motivated and that’s fine, but being disciplined in your work ethic will push you towards your goals.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
We all get overwhelmed it’s unavoidable. The best thing to do is to step away from whatever it is that’s overwhelming you at the moment and take a little break. Go for a walk, play a game, write, listen to your favorite playlist, exercise, or just do something completely unrelated to the overwhelming situation. You’d be surprised how much easier it is to go back and find the solution that you need for the overwhelm.
