We recently connected with Kamilah Ferrari and have shared our conversation below.
Kamilah, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
In a general sense I view “purpose” as a somewhat ever-changing, constantly evolving variable. Purpose can be sparked by something as simple as sheer interest, inspiration, or a sudden self-awareness. It can magically come to life through feelings of empathy, injustice, and even the briefest moments of empowerment. It can be one thing or a lifetime of things. Purpose is meaningful. It’s intentional. It’s something that you suddenly feel inclined to do because you believe it has to be done.
I believe the purpose in creating my brand unexpectedly stumbled upon me.
A genuine interest in health and wellness. Constant disappointment. Feeling an overwhelming lack of personalization. Disgusted by greed and misinformation. Concern by the industry’s blind eye to excessive packaging. Unimpressed by harmful formulas with minimal results. Inspired to excessively research alternatives. Hopeful for my new-found knowledge. Optimistic to lab-test my personal formulas. Blown away by the outcome.
Although initially meant for my own benefit, I couldn’t help but share my discovery with family and friends. As they raved about their unexpected, equally-phenomenal skin transformations, I soon began simply giving products out to those interested (yes, for free!). As I started getting more requests, I knew I would need to open a store to fulfill demands.
Soon I had the opportunity to not only share the products I loved, but to uphold all of the positive brand ethics I felt were typically lacking from modern day beauty brands.
To make others feel good from the inside out. To actually listen and understand their skin concerns in order to tailor their products to their personalized needs. To protect the environment by being vegan — as well as shipping with recyclable, minimal packaging and remaining 100% carbon-neutral.
The truth is, I never in my life thought of creating a skincare line, I eventually just felt that sharing my product was absolutely necessary.
“It’s something that you suddenly feel inclined to do because you believe it has to be done.”
That’s basedSKIN.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Fast forward – I’m an entrepreneur as well as the owner of what’s now known as basedSKIN.
So who is basedSKIN. today?
basedSKIN. is a cruelty-free skincare line that takes a smarter approach to skincare. We value high-quality ingredients, clean formulas, transparency, personalized service, sustainability, and eco-awareness.
basedSKIN. products are vegan/cruelty-free, non-GMO, fragrance and dye free — as well as free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, formaldehyde, mineral oil, and all harmful chemicals and preservatives.
Collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed topically (through the skin). My cruelty-free Collugreen (coll-U-green) formulas contain revolutionary polypeptides that accelerate cellular function and stimulate the skin to produce 350% more Collagen, Elastin, and Hyaluronic Acid from WITHIN. It feeds our stores of glycosaminoglycan and fibroblasts, strengthening the connective tissue to firm aging complexions.
Your choice of serum features different vitamin combinations tailored to skin type and goals. They all promote 6 skin rebuilding essentials including three different types of collagen, two types of proteins, and Hyaluronic Acid. All serums contain less than 10 ingredients. Science meets nature.
Our cleansers, serums, and moisturizers work together harmoniously to adequately hydrate and balance the skin’s pH, reinforce your skin’s moisture barrier, heal and clear acne, treat and prevent eczema and dermatitis, reduce wrinkles, increase skin’s firmness and elasticity, fade scars and hyperpigmentation, reverse UV damage, and protect skin against free radicals and environmental damage. Yep – really!
Vegan & Non-GMO.
Free of fragrance, dyes, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, & all harmful chemicals and preservatives. By using active ingredients and avoiding the use of harsh preservatives/fillers — products are concentrated and effective.
Fresh, Active Ingredients Only.
Skincare products are made fresh and custom for every order and last 6 — 12 months from postmarked date.
For All Skin Types.
Products work with dry, oily, combination, acne-prone, sensitive, & mature skin while targeting a number of skin conditions and concerns. Ingredients are dermatologist tested and cleansers are also ophthalmologist tested and safe for contact-wearers.
Eco-Friendly, Sustainable, & Carbon-Neutral.
We do not individually box our products and instead design all packaging for re-use. Product packaging is reusable + recyclable and shipping/packaging is made from recycled materials. Additionally, we ship all products using the first-ever 100% carbon-neutral shipping service in the USA.
Customized Experience.
I believe skin care is vastly personal for many, and should be treated as such. We are proud to offer a special, personalized experience to those interested. We work with potential clients free of cost to find the ideal products for your particular skin type. I’m directly available to help with skin questions and product information. Due to our customized service, basedSKIN. is becoming known in the modeling community for catering to our clients and preparing them for their photoshoots and major productions/projects.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think three important qualities when it comes to any new endeavor are self-sufficiency, constantly learning, and being truly passionate in your work.
I have always felt comfortable doing things for myself. If I didn’t know how to do something, I’d learn. This doesn’t mean “walking alone” and rejecting help – you should accept assistance and guidance whenever necessary. To me, it simply means feeling confident enough to discover the world on your own. Hard work is indeed necessary. Be self-sufficient and take initiative to find your strengths and continuously improve.
Whether it be academia, emotional intelligence, or learning how to better communicate – it’s critical to accept knowledge no matter where you are in your life. Learn everything about your field of interest/business. Keep an open mind to understand others better. Learn more about yourself every single day. Constantly learning is crucial to evolving.
And lastly – enjoy what you do. I think that’s pretty self explanatory. Life is a lot better when you’re genuinely invested in your craft. It makes you strive that much harder for your goals. Passion is truly a driver.
In a way, these three things all tie in to one or another. Being educated will help your confidence which will in turn help you become more self-sufficient. Loving what you do will also make you want to learn as much as you can and do as much as you possibly can. Simply stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things is also a great way to build your confidence and help you acquire the independence you’ll require as a professional.
Don’t give up or feel discouraged. Every journey is unique.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Partnerships – Paid Opportunity: We are currently open to working with influencers, models, and skin care enthusiasts from all walks of life and stages of their skincare and influencer journeys. You can learn more about our current available opportunities and submit for consideration here: https://basedskin.com/partnerships
Models – Paid/Content:
Being a sustainable brand that focuses more on results and less on fancy, excessive packaging, I feel it’s especially necessary to bring our formulas to life through creative, visual campaigns showcasing physical product results. I love versatile ways of showcasing our products that don’t mimic the typical skincare brand presentation. Our “lookbook” features clients and models who have used our products – many which have gone through complete skincare transformations using our systems. If interested in collaborating with us on a campaign – you may reach out through our website or direct e-mail.
