Meet KaMiyah McNair

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful KaMiyah McNair a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

KaMiyah , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience will only come from stress, discomfort, and bad traumatic experiences. I feel that I get my resilience from not always trying to be strong but in fact allowing myself to break and then digging deep within to fight, to rebuild. Giving yourself grace to not be perfect and have bad days. Being able to pick yourself off the floor and putting one foot in front of the other even when it feels odds are against you and impossible. When you face adversities don’t allow it to change your nature or who you are you gotta bounce back and get stronger. Progress matters way more than perfection.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my business in 2020 during a battle with depression. Baking was my coping mechanism and still is. It first started as a simple Mothers Day present to my mom and stepmom and blew up from there. I adore my customers and built a strong relationship with them! I am a self taught baker/treat maker who doesn’t follow recipes. I am currently in the process of expanding my business so that I will be able to better serve my customers and travel around NC with my treats.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Be unique, know your worth and always advertise your business. It’s not easy being an business owner and everything won’t always go smoothly. But if it’s your passion and something you truly love, it will be nothing short of amazing in the end! I love my customers and my business is like my baby. I take pride in what I do and I make sure my customers are pleased with the products I provide for them.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
At the moment my expansion process is a little difficult. Not being able to do everything is really hard for me because I want to do so much in a short amount of time. Though fairly expensive especially with a small business the goal right now is getting a dessert truck and put the funds together to do so. I’m not a fan of creating bills or loans and because of that I know it will be a longer process. Eventually I would love to make this my full time job.
