We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kammy Burnett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kammy, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Throughout my life, I’ve never been afraid to try new things. Different jobs, different foods, and different activities. Over time, I discovered what I enjoyed and what truly made me happy. Many things that gave me fulfillment when I was younger, didn’t give me as much joy as I got older. I remember, I used to be all over the place. I couldn’t focus on just one or two things. I had to be involved in numerous activities. That wasn’t all bad, since these adventures are very helpful being an actor.
I’ve always made people laugh. When I was younger, I never knew why people would laugh at me. I thought people were making fun of me. It wasn’t until I turned 50 that I decided to take both a comedy writing and a standup comedy workshop. I truly wanted to know what made me so funny. Well, I learned a whole lot at these workshops, and so I set out to write comedy routines and perform them at open mics.
I also make comedy skits for Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram. My specialties have been impersonating celebrities. I’ve done Sarah Palin, Jen Psaki, Caitlyn Jenner, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris. I was recently contacted via email by a talent agency in Las Vegas who was looking for a Nancy Pelosi impersonator in Las Vegas for an investment app called Autopilot. I got to walk around the casinos being Nancy, and I walked around and gambled with YouTuber Mike Majlak. I also got to sit in the first row at the UFC event in Vegas. It was a great experience. Since then, I got asked to be on a podcast called Jenerational Change as Kamala Harris. That was a whole lotta fun too.
Whether it’s impersonating a celebrity, or being on-stage doing standup, I believe comedy is my God-given talent, and my purpose in life. There’s nothing like hearing someone tell me that they were having a bad day, or feeling depressed, and they watched my videos and felt better. That’s a gift and I need to keep giving.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m currently focusing on my comedy career. Growing my YouTube and Tiktok, as well as doing standup.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I believe originality and creativity, observation and timing and delivery are the qualities that were impactful in my journey as a comedian. My advice to others who are just beginning their comedy journey is to keep writing and come up with different scenarios. Make comedy videos, post them and see what happens. You will find out what works and what doesn’t. Also, write stuff that you think is funny. Because others will probably find it funny too. Just know, not everyone is going to thing you’re funny and that’s ok.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I believe collaborating with others in your field is extremely important. Comedians always do well when they collaborate with other comedians. There’s no better way to grow your channel or social media as having other comedians to film videos with. I’ve been mainly impersonating political figures, and I’m open to collaborating with other political figures. I’m also open to collaborating with comedians outside of the political arena. With creativity, there’s no shortage of funny skits that can be made. I look forward to that. I can be reached at Kammyburnett@yahoo.com or on IG at www.instagram.com/kammyburnett.
