We were lucky to catch up with Kane Kelly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kane, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from my wife and kid. Responsibility to provide for my family removes any selfish excuses. Dedication to doing my absolute best to provide for a family. I feel fortunate to be able to have a career that I enjoy and freedom to dabble in music as a creative outlet while being able to provide for my family.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Music has always been a big part of my life. I started learning music in a young age, piano some saxophone and found guitar in my teens, which led my interest into diverse musical styles. After years of working in other groups and supporting the vision of others, I decided to start a ‘band’ brand that I could own and pick up or place on hold according to me own time without any dependence on others.
So I started ‘die Strömms’, which allowed me to hold on to some musical styles of my youth while developing and growing as a songwriter, producer and musician. Stretching out into other instruments than guitar like mandolin, banjo, bouzouki and fiddle, I have locked into folk styles mixed with rock as a source for creativity. Having a number of releases out, I am releasing a 7th full length soon called “Folk Punk II’, as a follow up to ‘Folk Punk’ which are have alt-punk versions of old time folk classics.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The one skill that stands out as most important is having a ‘DIY’ ethic. The ability to watch, learn and absorb knowledge with the intent to practice that knowledge into a new skill. It’s not about what you know, it’s about your ability to learn. I would say if there is one skill to have, it is the passion for knowledge and learning. This is central to the ‘DIY’ ethic. We are fortunate to live in a day and age when there are so many easily accessible opportunities to grow knowledge and learn.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is an interesting read, Over time, it has become a known publication but are essentially a diary for Marcus Aurelius. Stoicism is a fascinating study of a human searching for self improvement outside of a religious dogma.
