We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaprice Maxwell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaprice, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive when I accept musical challenges that are beyond my current state of knowledge. This naturally creates a process of discovering new things and learning how to adapt and utilize the new information being learned so that I can apply the information to my craft, in my own way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Milwaukee, WI-based vocalist and musician, dedicated to bringing soulful music to life. As a two-time internationally awarded vocalist and the only individual to win a NAACP ACT-SO award in Wisconsin, I take pride in my artistry and commitment to excellence.
Currently, I host a live music residency at Bar Centro, where I curate an intimate evening of jazz, neo-soul, and soulful gospel. Held every second Saturday of the month through the end of the year, this showcase is designed to uplift, inspire, and create a welcoming space for music lovers and fellow creatives.
Music has the power to heal, connect, and transform, and my mission is to foster an environment where people can experience its profound benefits. In a world that isn’t always positive or healthy, I strive to use my voice and instrumentation to bring light, inspiration, and a sense of community to all who listen.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Leadership, Learning, and Performing
Leadership
Strong leadership is essential to maintaining my brand and image. As a hospitable and communicative person, I prioritize clear, effective collaboration with my bandmates and clients. Leadership also means being ready to support others, regardless of my own commitments. To uphold my artistic integrity and professionalism, I recognize that sacrifices must sometimes be made to protect my brand and presentation.
Learning
Continuous learning is at the heart of my craft. I dedicate time to dissecting and analyzing the repertoire of music I perform and write. While music is often seen as a natural gift, it is also a science—one that becomes even more powerful when studied. Just as no project can be built without the right tools, no musician can truly excel without understanding the fundamentals. I strive to inspire other artists to embrace music theory, recognizing its immense value in mastering the industry.
Performing
For me, performing is more than just presenting my music—it’s about creating an experience. As the focal point on stage, my goal is to captivate the audience, ensuring they feel connected, engaged, and at home. A great performance goes beyond talent; it’s about forging an emotional bond that lingers long after the music ends and keeps people wanting more of the experience.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Growing up in Milwaukee, WI, I was fortunate to be part of numerous fine arts and music programs that helped shape my career. Organizations such as the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Children’s Choir, the African American Children’s Choir, Milwaukee High School of the Arts, and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music have all played a pivotal role in my development as a musician. I am deeply grateful for the educators who nurture their students’ talents and guide them through the challenges of mastering their craft. Their dedication is invaluable, as it not only refines artistic skills but also lays a strong foundation for a child’s future in music.
