We recently connected with Kara (KC) Chaney and have shared our conversation below.
Kara (KC), thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
My fashion choices and designs are an extension of my personality, allowing me to feel confident and comfortable. When I feel good about my appearance, it boosts my overall confidence and presence. Naturally, I’m charismatic and easy to talk to, so I leverage my true self in situations where I may feel uncomfortable. This helps me overcome nervousness and be more successful in any social setting. Maintaining professionalism while displaying unique style, shows balance and respect and displays authenticity. I don’t worry about what people may think, I jump in and introduce myself or make compliments, leading to a conversation starter. I use the opportunity to connect, share my story, and build relationships. My style is very adaptable to the various settings I may attend, my fashion is my attitude and my first impression. I often manipulate dress codes and cultural norms of various environments, while still being inclusive to the setting. Utilizing these skills, has helped me enhance my effectiveness and success. By showing inclusivity, diversity and, breaking social norms, I have been able to confidently and thoughtfully integrate them into my professional life. This approach allows me to make a lasting impact and create a more inclusive and dynamic environment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a fashion designer specializing in custom leather designs for performance racing and fashion runways. My fashion brand, Lavish The lifestyle, represents confidence, and individuality, and showcases a multitude of lifestyles. I am thrilled to announce the launch of my exclusive custom consultations on my website (LavishTheLifestyle.com), where customers can design their own one-of-a-kind leather ensembles. Each piece will be uniquely crafted and tailored to their specifications.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Creativity
My ability to think outside the box and create unique, custom leather designs has been a cornerstone of my success. This creativity allows me to offer something truly special and distinct in the fashion industry.
Adaptability & Resilience
Navigating different settings and being able to adapt my fashion sense and attitude to various environments has been crucial. This adaptability has helped me overcome challenges and thrive in diverse situations.
Communication/Networking
Building strong relationships and effectively communicating with clients, peers, and industry professionals has been vital. My natural charisma and ability to connect with others have opened doors and created opportunities for growth and collaboration.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and experiment with different styles, techniques, and ideas. Creativity often comes from pushing boundaries and exploring the unknown. Surround yourself with sources of inspiration, whether it’s art, nature, or anything else that may inspire you. Be open to new experiences and changes in your environment. View challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than obstacles. Surround yourself with like minded individuals, supportive friends, mentors, and peers who can offer advice, encouragement, and different perspectives. By focusing on these few areas and consistently working to improve them, you’ll be well on your way to a successful and fulfilling journey in your chosen field.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I find meditation and music particularly helpful. Practicing mindfulness and meditation keeps me present and centered, reducing stress and anxiety. Listening to music is incredibly soothing and uplifting, providing a mental escape and helping me relax and refocus. These practices play a crucial role in maintaining my well-being and managing stress effectively.
