Meet Kara Stevens

We recently connected with Kara Stevens and have shared our conversation below.

Kara , we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my own personal journey of overcoming debt and limiting beliefs about money. Through that experience, I learned the importance of self-worth and financial empowerment. As a brown girl myself, I understand the unique challenges we face in society and the negative stereotypes that can impact our relationship with money. I am passionate about helping black women break free from financial struggles and build wealth. My mission with The Frugal Feminista is to provide resources and support to help women transform their relationship with money and achieve financial confidence. My resilience comes from my commitment to empowering others and making a positive impact in the lives of black women.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am Kara Stevens, an author, speaker, and founder of The Frugal Feminista. My mission is to help women heal their relationships with money and themselves. I created The Financial Fullness Framework, a trauma-informed methodology that centers the lived experiences of BIPOC communities in financial wellness teachings. I work as a financial coach and consultant, partnering with companies globally to enhance employee wellness and work culture.

When I’m not advocating for women’s emotional and financial liberation, you can find me taking naps, sipping lattes, or enjoying a good book.

The Frugal Feminista is a professional and educational services firm that specializes in delivering quality financial literacy education and coaching. The Frugal Feminista creates and delivers an extensive variety of superior financial products and services including seminars, workshops, curricula, coaching, and training on money mindset, budgeting, credit repair, debt elimination and management, retirement planning, and entrepreneurship. As a personal finance and personal development company, The Frugal Feminista is committed to helping vulnerable communities transform their relationship with money in a holistic way.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Financial Literacy: Having a solid understanding of financial principles was crucial to my journey. This understanding allows me to empower others, particularly women and BIPOC communities, by equipping them with the financial knowledge they need to transform their lives.

Emotional Intelligence: This quality helps me understand and empathize with the lived experiences of others, particularly those from BIPOC communities. It also enables me to guide people to heal their relationships with money and themselves, as well as to advocate for women’s emotional and financial liberation.

Self-care: As an advocate for women’s emotional and financial liberation, practicing self-care is not just a personal necessity but also a professional responsibility. By taking care of my own well-being, I am able to share my healthy habits and inspire others to do the same.

Starting with financial literacy, it’s like learning a new language – dive into books, online resources, and when it comes to money matters, don’t be shy to ask questions. For emotional intelligence, it’s a bit like getting to know yourself better – practicing mindfulness, being aware of your emotions, and walking in others’ shoes can really help. Now, self-care is all about loving yourself. Make time for activities that spark joy, feed your body with good food, move a bit, and rest a lot. Looking after your mental health is just as important. And always know, it’s completely okay to say no when you need to. All these might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but remember, every big journey starts with small steps.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my mother did for me was to demonstrate resilience and determination in the face of adversity. As a single Black immigrant woman in America, she worked tirelessly to provide for our family, managing to secure a home – a significant achievement that reflected her strength and perseverance. Despite the emotional turmoil and physical clutter that filled our home, it was a symbol of her fight, her survival.

And for that, I am forever grateful.
