We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kareem Youngblood a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kareem, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
For a long time, I felt like I was just lucky to be in the rooms I worked my way into — from TV baking competitions to non profits boardrooms. Imposter syndrome hit hardest after I left my 9–5 to compete on Spring Baking Championship. I had no safety net, just faith in my craft and years of self-taught skill. When I returned home, broke but proud, I realized I hadn’t been “lucky” — I had been prepared.
I overcame imposter syndrome by reframing it: I stopped seeing doubt as a weakness and started treating it as proof that I was doing something new and bold. I began tracking my growth — not my fears — through data, storytelling, and impact. When students I teach in digital marketing start doubting themselves, I remind them: you can’t feel like an imposter in something you’re building from scratch. You are the blueprint.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a pastry chef, educator, and digital creative from Brooklyn, best known for my dessert brand The Cupka’ak Bar and my appearances on Netflix’s Sugar Rush, Food Network’s Chopped Sweets, and Spring Baking Championship. My work blends storytelling, nostalgia, and design — using desserts as a way to connect people and spark joy.
Right now, I’m expanding The Cupka’ak Bar beyond traditional baking into storytelling and education — through collaborations, live pop-ups, and creative digital content. I also teach digital marketing, helping emerging creators and entrepreneurs turn their stories into brands with real-world impact.
What’s next is all about growth — from launching new dessert collections and merch drops to hosting live baking demos and panel conversations that mix food, culture, and purpose. My goal is to inspire others to see that creativity, like baking, can rise from anywhere.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that shaped my journey most are resilience, curiosity, and authenticity.
Resilience taught me to keep showing up — even when money was tight, opportunities fell through, or I had to start over. Growth happens in the quiet moments when no one’s watching, so my advice is: don’t confuse slow progress with failure.
Curiosity pushed me to keep learning — whether it was baking techniques, social media analytics, or brand strategy. Every new skill became a bridge to the next version of me. Stay curious enough to be bad at something new.
Authenticity is what turned my work into my brand. Once I stopped trying to fit into someone else’s idea of success, everything aligned — from my baking to my storytelling. Be honest about who you are, and your work will always have power.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes—I’m actively open to collaborations.
I love partnering where food, story, and community meet. I’m especially interested in:
Culinary & CPG brands for limited-edition desserts, product tie-ins, and recipe content.
Media & events (daytime TV, podcasts, festivals) for live baking demos, judging, and upbeat segments.
Education & youth programs for creative workshops that blend baking, branding, and digital skills.
Venues & retailers (cafés, corner stores, pop-ups) for The Cupka’ak Bar takeovers and weekly cupcake drops.
Speaking & corporate sessions on resilience, storytelling, and building a brand from scratch.
If you’re values-driven, community-minded, and excited to make something joyful (and delicious), let’s talk.
