We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karen Carey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karen below.
Hi Karen , appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience and brilliance walk hand in hand. When I was three years old I had a severe trauma. After I recovered, I had a momentary revelation. A Sunday school teacher asked me my name. Unlike my precocious, bossy, silly, loving self, I hid behind my mother and whispered my name. It was inaudible and after a couple of tries, the frustrated teacher walked away.
I thought to myself, “What happened to me, I’m different”? That moment showed me so much about being human. Because I didn’t remember the details I became fascinated by people. The way they behave, what they say, what makes them tick, why they do what they do. And most importantly, why did I do that? This taught me that no matter what the challenge, there will be a new awakening, a new perspective on the other side.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am dedicated to bringing passion and focus, and peace and joy to individuals and organizations.
I work with individuals who are looking for their authentic path. Desiring to enjoy life by being their best self. This is not about perfection. This is about meeting yourself where you are at and with courage and clarity moving forward.
I work much the same with organizations that are ready to change the culture and step forward on a new, aligned, and cohesive path.
I use CultureTalk Archetype surveys to help you identify your values, what makes you tick, and to understand why.
I studied and certified in many alternative and traditional modalities to help heal my life. When I took my first Archetype survey everything changed. I finally understood how I see the world and the unconscious strengths and patterns within me.
I started in the beauty industry and worked with an organization out of Europe that focused on customer service and team building. This was a profound experience and led me to a deep understanding of the power of a happy and cohesive team, and of a quality customer experience. I became a Transpersonal Counselor, Reiki Master, Reflexologist, Yoga and NIa teacher, and a fitness instructor. And lastly, I went to Accomplishment Coaching and became a certified life coach. I love speaking, teaching, and coaching.
I believe coaching brings together the magical and the practical, to help you move forward in significant and meaningful ways. I like that coaching allows me to bring all the innate and learned tools together to meet you where you are at, and give you the most transformative experience possible.
For more than thirty years I have worked with entrepreneurs, leaders, and organizations. So much fun! As you can tell I love what I do.
I am currently offering a new program called Kintsugi Yoga. Kintsugi is the art of taking broken pieces and turning them into something beautiful. We combine yoga practices and principles with the wisdom of the life you’ve lived. We turn your pieces into peace and joy as you declare the life you want and make the long-lasting changes that serve you on your journey.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I had an innocent quality about me, believing everything was possible. I was willing to take responsibility for all areas of my life. All the things that went well and all those that didn’t. And the will to take the next scary step. At least most of the time.
The tricky, and most important part, is to get to know yourself. What do you value? What do you want? What are your stories and triggers? What are the thoughts and words you use? Do they support you or diminish you?
Know that you are responsible for your life. No one is coming to fix you. Get the support you need, but only do what works for you. Everyone is different. When you know and accept who you are, you give yourself the power to choose your own path.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Four Agreements was my book. I took it everywhere. I even started a Four Agreements group program. Not taking anything personally and not making assumptions. Whoa! How do we do that?
One of the most valuable lessons was that not taking anything personally, allowed me to be me. To take responsibility. To be able to discern what was going on and realize that what I thought was coming at me, was really coming from me. To me not making assumptions is the same. When we take something personally, we are making all kinds of assumptions.
