Meet Karen Paige

We were lucky to catch up with Karen Paige recently and have shared our conversation below.

Karen , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
As I read this question I have to tell you that my purpose found me. As a young 19 yr old with a business degree the world was my oyster Right ? or one might think. My life had many twists and turns.

My thoughts go back to the birth of my first born son. My son was diagnosed with seizures and failure to thrive. What does that mean to a 19 yr old single mother with no experience in motherhood; let alone having to navigate the complexities of being a mother to a medically fragile special needs child. I knew from that point on my LIFE would FOREVER be different, but I just did not know how or even why.

I knew what was needed was bigger than me but I could not fill my lungs up with enough air to utter the words, I just could not remember how to take a BREATH; as the tears rolled down my cheeks I began to say God I need your help please help me! My cries were heard and God sent me an angel of a nurse named Ann. God knew what I needed and delivered her fresh with me in mind. Ann prayed with and for me and my baby. I never knew what she was praying for as she cared for us and read the Bible, but I knew something was happening. That something was the presence of PEACE. My son gave me all the qualities that a NURSE would need to work in the field of health professionals. God sent me nurse Ann to watch over me and pray as he groomed me for my purpose: Your Karing Nurse Practitioner.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

As I sit and reflect on this quote, I realize how much it resonates in my professional life, as the Lead Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, my days are filled with organizing my patients’ needs and wants, governing a hemodialysis unit the nursing staff, delegating task to interns/residents and support staff. I am also an adjunct professor at Hunter college where I teach for the undergraduate nursing program as well as the graduate nurse practitioner program. My goal is to always leave the people that I meet during my day-to-day interactions with a lasting impression of self-worth, self-love, confidence and an understanding that everything they do must be done from a place of love, selflessness and helping others which is the purest place from which feelings flow.

With that being said I strive every day to be “Nurse Ann” to my cohorts. Herein lies why my brand and profession overlap in regards to self-care and self-love, At Paige Enterprizes LLC we work hard at helping healthcare professionals to focus on empowering themselves as individuals and to prioritize self-love and care while embracing their authentic selves without feeling ashamed or pressured to prioritize others’ happiness over their own.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I would have to say that I have attained many qualities, skills and a great understanding of many things but the attributes that stick out the most to me are Empathy, Listening and having a great understanding of people. These have been hugely impactful on my journey.

My advice to many would be to remember to listen with your ears as well as your eyes for better understanding. Show empathy to all, even though you may not feel that it is warranted; remembering we all walk a different path in life. And lastly, Accept people for who they are instead of who you perceive them to be. Never judge a book by its cover and remember to meet people where they are that is the only way to foster true growth.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My entire life I have been surrounded by strong black women with the gift of giving, from my grandmother down to my mother I saw how giving was the most powerful thing you could do. Even when I started my own life journey and became a wife, mother of three sons and a nurse, I adopted many of my mother’s beliefs and core values for helping others, showing love and being of service. Thus, it is apparent that my motto has been a part of my life before I even knew my true purpose.
