We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karen Turadek a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Karen , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I discovered my purpose through my kids. When they were in preschool, they sometimes brought Ziploc bags for spare clothes, and I realized how many bags were being wasted in the process, which was harmful to the environment. I thought that creating a reusable bag for them would be beneficial for the planet, and I knew I wasn’t alone in this concern.
To pursue this idea, I taught myself how to sew by watching online videos. I focused on finding the best reusable fabrics and designs specifically for my children. I also wanted to support local small businesses in the process. After some searching, I finally found what I needed, and that’s how I started my shop.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi, my name is Karen Ofelia, and I am the founder of Ofelia City East Shop. My shop primarily operates online, and I am dedicated to creating sustainable products. I believe in crafting high-quality items that are designed to last and won’t end up in landfills. We focus on accessories for both kids and adults. Our bestsellers include reusable toiletry bags, but we have also expanded our product range to include hair ties and small pouches. I am currently working on new accessories for young children, so stay tuned for updates!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, my primary focus areas for enhancing my workplace were planning, organization, and communication skills. My advice for those starting this journey is simple: it’s okay to make mistakes; you’ll learn from them. Always be yourself, and never let anyone tell you who you are!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
My best work emerges under pressure, which fuels my drive to excel and conquer challenges. My advice is to be focused and not overthink, which keeps you efficient. My passion for what I do makes the journey manageable and truly rewarding.
