We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karina (aka Kay Vixn) a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Karina, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
One of the many fun challenges of being an independent artist and musician is maintaining a constant flow of creativity, to keep building momentum throughout our artistry. To achieve that, I believe it’s important to be intentional about finding ways to nurture and boost your creativity. I have found a few ways that help me instantly get the creativity flowing, like dancing and writing. However, for more sustainable creativity I like to keep an open mind and always keep learning! For example, I recently took a few production, vocal mixing and mastering courses that gave me the creative motivation to release a new song. I believe new knowledge enhances my abilities and therefore jumpstarts my creativity again and again.
Another fantastic way to keep your creativity alive is getting together with likeminded individuals, finding your community, and collaborating with others in your creative space. I am lucky to have found an amazing dance community in my city and love being a part of their events and performances. Being around people that are aligned with your creative goals will naturally help keep each other’s creativity alive and thriving.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a multifaceted Colombian artist, singer-songwriter, producer, and performer. I started in the industry as the lead singer with a live cover music band in South Florida at the age of 19, and continued performing with local event companies, and making music throughout the years. My areas of expertise include singing, songwriting, music production, and recording vocals. What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to create different styles and genres of music in English and Spanish, ranging from alternative, pop, electronic, and Latin among others. I am also an avid dancer and performer at special events, specializing in aerial silks and acro yoga.
I am most proud of my dedication and passion for music for over two decades. I have a home-studio where I am able to produce, record, and collaborate with people all over the world remotely. I am set to release my new song “Forever” on January 1st and I’m excited to begin the new year sharing new music with the world!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
A few of the many qualities that have guided my journey so far are passion, positivity, and persistence. At the core of every artist there is usually a lot of passion and love for what they do. Ever since I can remember I’ve had a deep passion for music, and I have always let that passion guide me and motivate me to continue creating and doing what I love.
Although it may be easy to get discouraged or want to give up when we don’t see the results we want, I believe keeping a positive and optimistic attitude goes a long way in keeping your dreams alive. And of course, being persistent and working through all the creative challenges is crucial to finding success in the artistic world.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I have a few go-to strategies that I utilize when I’m feeling overwhelmed. The first thing I usually do is take a break and step back from whatever is overwhelming me at the moment. Sometimes just by taking a few breaths to clear my mind I can go back and approach the situation with more ease. I also talk to the people I love about overwhelming situations, and I found that others are usually willing to listen and help if possible. I’ve learned that it’s okay to ask for help and we don’t have to face all our challenges alone. And of course, as a musician, I will always run back to music when things get overwhelming and for me there’s nothing like a good music and dance session to clear my mind and help me find my balance again. My advice to others feeling overwhelmed is to take a break, talk to the people they love, and spend more time following their passion!
