Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karissa Burkee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karissa, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I always knew I wanted a career in the beauty industry, so I went to a Paul Mitchell cosmetology school right out of high school. After working in a salon for a while, I fell in love with doing wedding hair and having the privilege of styling brides on their big day. I saw the need for brides and their bridal parties to have the luxury of convenience and onsite glam, so they could relax and enjoy their day in the location of their choosing, without the stress of traveling to a salon to have their hair done. I also desired the flexibility of creating my own schedule with motherhood and owning a home. My best friend and I joined together as Blushed Beauty offering hair and makeup based in our hometown in Northern Michigan. It was always my dream to live in the South, and that dream came true at the end of 2020. Making Chapin, SC my new home, I launched k.b. glam in March 2021 as an onsite hairstylist in Columbia and surrounding areas. I love what I do and feel honored to start the day with brides on one of the most important days in their life, while having flexibility during the week as a busy mom. One of my most favorite instructors in cosmetology school used to say, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Along with being a hairstylist, I worked as a server in restaurants for 14 years. Serving was the first job that I obtained, and I absolutely loved the fast-paced environment and quickly gained the knowledge to be aware of what people need before they even ask for it. I combined my experience in the service industry with my passion for hair and decided to branch out on my own offering onsite hairstyling after spending time working in a salon. The experience I provide is more than just hairstyling. I am attentive to all needs that brides and their bridal parties may have that day. From popping the champagne, to helping steam a dress, I want my clients to feel that they are cared for and receive the best quality of service that they deserve.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three most important qualities in my business journey have been dedication, communication, and organization. I had to tell myself many times to remain humble and keep working hard, even when the results didn’t seem worth it some days. Remembering that you have a passion for what you do and know what you bring to the table as a person and a business is key in growing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
A lot of brides will look for a hair and makeup team for their wedding day. I offer onsite hairstyling, but I am not a makeup artist. However, I have met so many amazing makeup artists in the area and have a great network of vendors. I always love connecting with other artists and helping each other’s businesses grow!
