We recently connected with Karlie King and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karlie, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
One of the most important things on my journey has been understanding that it is ok to be uncomfortable. Sometimes you have be uncomfortable to reach your goals. My mom has always encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. I have learned that when I am comfortable there is no challenge, and I can become relaxed. With being a business owner, you have to be ready for any challenge. I took a risk with opening a business at a young age (I was only 8) with little experience. I knew there would be a lot of challenges along the way but it would be worth the risk. I have heard many people talk about their journeys, and they inspire me to take a chance at it. I don’t know what the end will be, but I have faith and believe my future will be bright with whatever I do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Of course, I am a 10-year-old girl who is super excited about life itself. I love learning, well math and science at least. I look forward to my fifth-grade year in the fall. When I am not creating donuts, I am spending time with my family & friends. We love to travel, try new restaurants, and watch movies together. I absolutely love to dance. I currently study six genres of dance, participate on a competition team, and just started lessons en pointe. Some fun facts about me are: I love watching cooking shows. I aspire to be a oncologist when I grow up. I love to be super silly. I created Mini Queen’s Mini Donuts because I believe in bringing families and friends together. Why not do so with something I truly love, DONUTS.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities and skills that were most impactful to me are dedication, networking and patience. I believe there three are needed for all business owners. When I started, I had to believe in my product and have faith that everything will work out. This is what kept me dedicated. I think being patient is the hardest. Not everything is going to come so quickly to you. My mom tells me all the time to trust the process. Networking is so important. It’s not just your community and friends that matter. The world is waiting to meet you too.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
One of the most impactful things my mother did for me was believe in me. When I first had the idea about my business, my mother listened and then asked me questions to see how invested I was. She then invested in my future and now my dreams are coming true. It feels good to have a support team. I am blessed to have several people who support and pour into me in various ways. My mother empowers me to be the best version of myself, keep my faith in God and most of all have FUN!
