Meet Karlil Wilson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karlil Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Karlil, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.

My ability to communicate effectively is something that I haven’t always been able to do. As I got older, having different experiences within my career, friendships, and relationships, I learned how to communicate my wants, needs, and opinions effectively, but it also helped me to listen to understand instead of just listening to respond.

Throughout my life, I always felt like nobody heard or cared about what I had to say, so I was always scared to speak or give my thoughts and opinions on specific topics. As I got older, though, I developed a need to be heard because I finally gained confidence and believed the things I had to say were necessary, and as long as I had that confidence, people would respect me and my words.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a podcast host. Podcasting and sharing my thoughts and opinions with the world has developed into a passion of mine. The most exciting and special thing about what I do is that it allows me to be my true self and speak freely. I don’t have to mince my words. I don’t have to code-switch; I don’t have to lie to appease others. I say exactly what I want and how I feel on my platform. The most rewarding thing is that I get to do it with my lifelong friends. My cohosts and I share this passion and give as much as we can to elevate this platform to heights we believe that we can reach. We have also built a dedicated team and community around us that show us so much love and support.

The one thing I want people to know about The SAME Convo is that we are not for everyone. That’s just the truth, and we understand that our content won’t appeal to everybody. But if you enjoy sports, anime, music, television, and movies, we are the podcast for you. Not just a podcast but a community.

Regarding news and events coming up, we are on Season 5 of our podcast, and for this season, we have started recording live on TikTok, Twitch, and YouTube every other Tuesday. If you cannot make the live streams, you can still catch our recorded episodes on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. We are also excited to attend Dreamcon this summer as well. Dreamcon is an anime and gaming convention hosted by the YouTube supergroup RDCWorld1 and this year; it will be in Houston for the first time. We will be there having street interviews with con-goers, so if you see us, please say Hey! We would love to connect.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important skills or qualities that have been the most impactful on this journey are Consistency, Adaptability, and Optimism. When you are a new creator trying to build your brand, being consistent with the output of your content is very important. You cannot have too much time to go by where you are not putting out or promoting content, or the road to the top will be harder to reach.

Being adaptable in this journey has helped a lot. I’ve had to be able to adjust my time and schedule and even sacrifice a few things to continue to try to make this dream a reality.

And I believe being optimistic is the most important of them all. You have to believe in yourself and your product. We have to trust what we are doing is working. We will have some really good days and a lot of bad ones, but as long as we stay optimistic and believe in ourselves, each other, and our product, we will reach that point we are trying to reach.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

We are always looking to collaborate with others who are in the same space we’re in. Even if they are not specifically sports or anime creators, we want to work with many creators, big or small.

We dream of joining a major network that can help us get more opportunities to get our content out to the masses and connect us with some of the more prominent platforms in the podcast, YouTube, and social media world.
