We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful KARMÅ. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with KARMÅ below.
KARMÅ, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity, for me, is like a living, breathing entity that thrives on exploration and freedom. To keep it alive, I immerse myself in diverse experiences and embrace a lifestyle that encourages curiosity and openness. I often find inspiration in the everyday—nature, conversations, art, and even silence. These moments fuel my creativity and inform my art in profound ways.
I also believe in the power of collaboration. Working with other artists and creatives introduces new perspectives and ideas that challenge my own, pushing me to explore uncharted territories in my art. It’s these collaborations that often spark the most unexpected and rewarding creative insights.
Another key aspect is allowing myself the space to fail. Creativity can’t flourish under fear of failure. By embracing the risks and accepting that not every attempt will be successful, I create a safe space for experimentation. This mindset not only keeps creativity alive, but also encourages a deeper, more authentic engagement with my work.
Lastly, I make it a practice to step back and recharge. Creativity can’t be forced, and sometimes the best way to reignite it is to take a break, let the mind wander, and return with a fresh perspective. Whether it’s through meditation, travel, or simply taking a walk, stepping away helps reset my creative compass and often leads me to my most profound ideas.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My work spans across composing, producing, singing, and playing piano, but it also ventures into the visual arts like graphic design and painting, making every project a comprehensive sensory journey.
What excites me the most about my art is the ability to blend genres and mediums to create something entirely unique. I thrive on pushing boundaries, challenging the norms of what music can or should be. This cross-pollination of sounds and visuals isn’t just about innovation for its own sake; it’s about creating a more immersive experience for the audience, inviting them into a world where every element is meticulously woven together.
Regarding my brand, I’d like people to know that KARMÅ isn’t just about music. It’s about authenticity, resilience, and transformation. It’s a tribute to the journey of overcoming and evolving through the trials we face. Each piece I create carries a fragment of this journey, a piece of this ongoing story.
My new EP, “LUMINERA,” is a perfect example of this. Comprising three tracks—”Limerence,” “Freeze As You Fall,” and “The Alchemist”—this EP represents a pivotal chapter in my artistic and personal growth. “Limerence” explores the intoxicating rush of newfound love and obsession, wrapped in layers of ethereal synths and haunting melodies. “Freeze As You Fall” delves into the moments of vulnerability and pause, capturing the frozen seconds of impact where the world seems to hold its breath. Lastly, “The Alchemist” is about transformation, the process of turning pain into power, and grief into growth. Each track not only stands alone with its own story but together, they compose a narrative arc that mirrors my own path of alchemizing emotions into art.
“LUMINERA” is more than just music; it’s a sonic embodiment of personal metamorphosis and the magic that happens when we dare to turn our deepest struggles into our most profound strengths. I invite listeners to join me on this journey, to find a piece of themselves in the melodies and perhaps emerge a little changed on the other side.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Reflecting on my journey, the three qualities that have been most impactful are resilience, curiosity, and emotional self reflection.
Resilience has been fundamental. The music industry, like any creative field, is filled with rejection and setbacks. Learning not to take these personally and instead using them as fuel to push forward and refine my art has been crucial. For those starting out, my advice is to view each setback as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. Cultivate grit; the path to success is a marathon, not a sprint.
Curiosity has driven me to constantly explore new musical styles, production techniques, and artistic expressions. This relentless pursuit of learning keeps my work fresh and exciting. For newcomers, stay endlessly curious. Learn everything you can about your craft and related fields. Experiment widely and wildly—the more you know, the more tools you have at your disposal to express your unique artistic vision.
Emotional reflection has enabled me to connect with my music and art on a very deep level. Understanding and expressing complex emotions through music is what touches people, and being attuned to my own emotions has been key in doing this effectively. To develop this, mindfulness and reflection are the most useful tools. This will enrich your art and its impact on others.
For those early in their journey, embrace challenges as opportunities to grow, stay curious about every aspect of your field, and connect deeply with the human experience through your art. This foundation will not only improve your craft but also help you navigate the highs and lows of a creative career with grace and authenticity.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past 12 months, my biggest area of growth has been in deepening my production skills and integrating new technologies into my creative process. Transitioning from traditional music production to incorporating advanced software and tools has opened up new avenues for creativity that I hadn’t fully tapped into before. This shift has not only enhanced the sonic quality of my music but also allowed me to experiment with complex soundscapes and textures in ways that were previously out of reach.
Learning to harness these tools effectively has been a journey of its own. It required a balance of technical skill and artistic sensitivity, ensuring that the technology enhanced rather than overshadowed the emotional core of my music. This development has significantly broadened my creative palette, enabling me to tell more nuanced and compelling stories through sound.
For anyone looking to grow in similar ways, I’d advise embracing technology not just as a toolset but as a partner in the creative process. Invest time in learning the capabilities and limitations of new software, experiment with how they can serve your unique artistic vision, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The fusion of technology and traditional creativity is a powerful one, and mastering it can truly transform your art.
