Meet Karma Peterson

We recently connected with Karma Peterson and have shared our conversation below.

Karma, thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.
Honestly, I think the best lessons come from heartbreak. I have been in many past relationships that broke me but also forced me to make critical decisions for my own well being. I remember one day realizing that in order to grow and develop into a mature woman I had to learn to separate my emotions (how I feel, what I feel) from logic (facts of the matter). I applied this thought to my dating life and it improved greatly because of it. This same thought can be applied to every other aspect of life and especially in the world of entrepreneurship. When I am tasked with making an important decision I never provide my answer the same day. I allow myself time to really think, sit, and feel whatever I need to in order to make the best possible decision.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My life coaching consulting business Let’s Self Evolve is committed to providing clients with the tools to be their best selves, in efforts to create their dream life! I work with women of all ages and provide them with encouragement and advice based off of personal experiences and relevant literature. My social media page encompasses a plethora of diverse content that is all closely related to the core of Let’s Self Evolve. I enjoy sharing what I have going on in my personal life so that clients or viewers feel connected to me and my journey. I think it is important for me to display transparency with my personal life because of the work I do.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Open-mindedness: it is important to be open to new ideas or different ways of thinking about things. In order to receive you must be open. Open up your heart and mind. You never know what someone will be able to provide for you.

2. Strengthening your intuition: one way to strengthen your intuition is to deepen your relationship with yourself. The more you get to know yourself the more you will be able to listen out for your inner self (intuition). Your spirit knows what is best for you before you do.

3. Listening: I for one love to talk! But as I have matured I have really enjoyed listening to others. Listening to others allows you to notice details that you do not notice when you are talking. Where there is a moment for listening there is a moment for learning.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I love this question because it is so relevant to where I am in life. Along with being an entrepreneur I am also a graduate student. My degree program is focused on cybersecurity and data privacy. Cybersecurity and data privacy as careers can be very technical and because of it, less people facing.

I know that my greatest strengths rest in connecting with others. This includes relationship building and being generally easy to talk to. These strengths/skills are not usually associated with cybersecurity work.

I am currently interviewing for positions in cybersecurity with no work experience specifically in the area of technology. In my interviews I am harping on my skills in relationship building and how I can connect with any and everyone. I may not have direct experience working in cybersecurity but the skills I do possess are just as important.

To answer the question: I think it important to bring your strengths to every room you walk into. Your strengths are what initially get you invited into the rooms that you may need to improve in. Use your strengths to leverage areas you wish to improve in.
