Meet Karrie Drinkhahn & Susan LaFleur

We were lucky to catch up with Karrie Drinkhahn & Susan LaFleur recently and have shared our conversation below.

Karrie & Susan, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

We are lucky enough to exist in a world where creativity surrounds us in our daily lives. It is in the vibrant colors in our home garden, the textures and patterns seen while window shopping with friends, and the conversations with strangers that spark current ideas. To keep your creativity fueled, immerse yourself in what genuinely interests you—whether it is art, nature, fashion, or music. It is crucial to stay curious, explore new perspectives, and challenge yourself to think differently. Most importantly, do not be afraid to take risks or step outside your comfort zone. Creativity thrives when we embrace it with an open mind and a willingness to see beauty and possibility.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As the Co-Founders of One Line Design Studio, we draw significant inspiration from both fashion and art. With Karrie’s background in art and Susan’s passion for fashion, our founders’ unique blend of influences is key to the success of our projects. Earlier this year, we celebrated our fifth anniversary, marking a milestone for a brand that thrives on innovation and fresh ideas. We are immensely proud of what we are building, and excited about the future as we continue to push boundaries and explore new creative possibilities.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three skills that impacted our journey the most are adaptability, versatility, and connectivity. The ability to adapt to situations in the industry is crucial, allowing you to find solutions and navigate challenges effectively. Versatility opens possibilities and fosters innovation, especially when collaborating with clients who have a specific vision. Lastly, building meaningful connections within the industry fosters personal and professional growth. As designers and in life, learning never stops so maintaining an open mindset is key to continually developing your skills and keeping your team, projects, and design process successful.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

The most valuable element to our brand has been our collective team. Over the past five years, their hard work, dedication, and enthusiasm have been instrumental in our success. Each team member contributes their unique perspectives and skills, shaped by their backgrounds, interests, and levels of experience. This diversity is paramount in defining who we are as the One Line Design brand, and we are incredibly grateful for all they do!
