We were lucky to catch up with Karrington Watson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Karrington, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Considering that I am only still in high school, I have truly been a “hustler” all my life. In elementary school, I sold rubber-band bracelets, slime, snacks & etc. for money and that idea of earning my own money was instilled in me at such a young age. I am a firm believer in anything is possible, especially when you include God, you just have to do the work to make that possible in your life and because of that, my work ethic is always at 110%. Somebody may be better than me at whatever task you place in front of me, but I know I will outwork them which is ultimately what matters. I don’t remember exactly who or what invested this hard-working mindset into my life but I thank whoever did because I literally took an inch and made it a mile and as my journey continues, I hope it make it a marathon.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am now working towards the path of graduation and transitioning into college. In June of 2024, I plan to walk across the stage & receive my diploma from Cass Technical High School, and attend Grand Valley State University. I also wish to open a third business so prayerfully, that’ll launch prior to graduation but if not, I will continue to work and out to use my entrepreneurial skills & knowledge.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Consistency, persistence and always being open to learning. Those three qualities have helped me become an entrepreneur, and not just being a business owner.
When you have a business, you must remain consistent but I don’t mean by posting on social media everyday… be consistent behind the scenes and do something productive that’ll help you towards your end goal, everyday.
The art of persistence is important because you have to be able to accept failure & rejection without being defeated. It’s normal to feel discouraged at times but persistence will keep you moving forward without ever looking back.
The ability to obtain knowledge is endless. You never stop learning, no matter how old you get or how much (you think) you know. There is always a token you can take from someone else especially when you know they have your best interest at heart.
We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I think that it is better to be well-rounded especially depending on the type of business you have. Once you’ve mastered a skill, there should always be another that you would like to pursue. As far as Miss Kari’s Kreations, I started with just beaded bracelets then I progressed to anklets and now I’m perfecting bangle bracelets and many other things that aren’t displayed to the public to better my business and myself as a business owner. Think of it like this… if you’re a basketball player, would you rather be known as the best shooter of all time or the greatest basketball player to ever play?
