Meet Kary Rho

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kary Rho. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kary, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I’d say I’ve always been a dreamer. I came all the way to the States with a big dream of becoming a filmmaker. I spent years making movies as an editor, building my career, but life has a way of evolving. I got married, became a mother to three incredible boys, and somewhere along the way, my dream began to fade into the background. It wasn’t intentional—it was just the rhythm of life, constantly moving forward.

But during the pandemic, everything slowed down. It gave me space to reflect. I remember asking myself, If this is where my life ends, how will I be remembered? What did I contribute? Did I become the person I dreamed I would be when I was younger? Those questions haunted me, but they also lit a fire inside me. I realized I had stories within me that needed to be told—not just for myself, but for others too.

That’s when I decided to start making films again. I didn’t set out to chase awards or massive recognition; I just wanted to touch one person’s heart, maybe two. If even a single audience member can feel hope, if my work inspires them to dream again, then that’s my purpose. My goal is to keep taking those small steps—to tell meaningful stories, inspire others to pursue their dreams, and remind people never to let go of what sets their soul on fire. That’s why I do what I do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Of course! I’m a filmmaker – writer, director, producer, and editor who is deeply passionate about storytelling. Over the years, I’ve created projects that explore themes of hope, love, and resilience—stories that speak to the heart.

Music has always been a big part of my creative journey. I’ve had the privilege of working on I Cross the Sea with You, a music documentary following the Korean band Byebyesea’s journey across the U.S., and Insomnia 4:00 AM, which delves into those late-night moments of reflection and longing, with music playing a pivotal role. Another project, 20, is a poetic exploration of life’s turning points, where music beautifully underscores the emotions. I even recently ventured into the world of theater with an off-Broadway musical, Blue Blind, blending traditional Korean culture with a modern rock style.

Right now, my focus is on new adventures, particularly Next-Gen Survival, a groundbreaking survival show featuring well known actors around the world. This project has been my way of stepping out of my comfort zone and overcoming my own fears. It’s been in the works for the past eight months, and now it’s finally coming together. The concept brings experienced survivalists and young contestants with AI technology together to face challenges across Korea’s stunning landscapes. It’s about innovation, teamwork, and reconnecting with nature—and I’m so excited to share it with the world soon! On the film side, I’m working on AEIOU-Z, a heartfelt story set in Brooklyn about a grieving musician finding healing through connections with others.

Through all my work, I aim to inspire. Whether it’s through films, documentaries, musicals, or now even a survival show, my goal is to connect with people, ignite hope, and remind them that it’s never too late to dream big.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been persistence, confidence, and the willingness to keep learning.

Persistence has been my anchor. This industry is full of challenges, setbacks, and moments when it’s easy to feel like giving up. But I’ve learned that as long as you keep going—one step at a time—you’ll find your way through. Confidence is another key piece. It doesn’t mean you won’t have doubts, but it’s about trusting yourself and your vision, even when others don’t immediately see it. And finally, accepting the need to learn and grow has been so important. Every project teaches me something new, and I’ve learned to embrace mistakes as part of the process.

To anyone early in their journey, my advice would be this: Stay positive, practice gratitude, and always remain professional. No matter how small the task, give it your best and trust yourself—you’re the captain of your own boat. The waves may seem overwhelming at times, but every storm will pass. You just have to keep steering forward and never let go of your dreams.

Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you, and don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek guidance. Growth comes from curiosity and a willingness to explore new ideas. And most importantly, believe that you’re on the right path. Every challenge you overcome is preparing you for something bigger.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m always open to new relationships, learning opportunities, and trying new things! Collaboration is at the heart of what I do, and I believe the best ideas come when people come together with open hearts and a shared passion.

If you’re someone who loves to dream big, create meaningful stories, or explore innovative ideas, I’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re in film, theater, music, or even a completely different creative field, let’s see how we can bring something beautiful to life together.
