Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karya Schanilec. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Karya, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome is something I work on overcoming everyday. But I try to focus on my track record, what I have accomplished, and who has trusted me and my talents.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am an NYC photographer and small business owner capturing the style and stories of real people. I am the photographer behind the viral Instagram page @karyastreetstyle, a community of people who love to see the everyday street style in NYC as well as the emerging trends of fashion week show-goers.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Business training – I completed an MFA graduate program in Arts Leadership in 2018, which has helped me so much with running my own business with knowledge in marketing, finance, leadership, and strategic planning. This type of education isn’t necessarily required to run a creative business, but learning about this subjects through courses or certificate programs can definitely help.
Adaptability – I believe my ability to adapt to different markets and demographics have allowed me to work with a wide variety of clients and have access to more opportunities. Where I started my photography journey is very different from where I am now, and I have had to adapt every step along the way.
Exploration – Not being afraid to try or shoot new things have allowed me to discover new passions and opened many doors to opportunities.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to work with brands and stylists who are looking to talk about street style and trend reporting!
