We were lucky to catch up with Kasandra recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kasandra , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
I have had to overcome feelings on inadequacy as a Registered Nurse and as a professional Tarot reader.
Nursing was my third career. Before then, I was a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (also referred to as a Medical Laboratory Technician), a Navy Corpsman, and an undesignated airman for the F/A-18 Hornet during my time in the U S. Navy where I collaborated with others to launch, recover, oil, fuel, and inspect the plane to prepare it for flight operations for our pilots (this was pretty cool to be doing at 19 years old!). I found transitioning to nursing to be the hardest.
I started on an advanced cardiology floor as a new grad nurse. Early on, nurses would at times quiz me on what I knew during report which is done at change of shift. I even had someone make a word document about everything I didn’t know who handed it to one of my supervisors. None of it was safety related. It hurt my feelings to have a coworker do this without even talking to me. I almost quit within my first year. I internalized the harsh words said by others and felt like maybe I wasn’t a great nurse. However, I remained in nursing to see what more time and a change of work environment would do. Turns out, I am a strong nurse! I have collaborated with others over 15 years to help many people and even save lives! As a Tarot reader, imposter syndrome took a different form.
Early on, thoughts would come and go, telling me that maybe I wasn’t good enough. Since then, I realized that I am an exceptional Tarot reader! I have continued to professionally read for others since Mountain Crow Tarot LLC was established in November 2023 (although I have been reading since 2019). I have helped others using Tarot as a tool for insight and reflection and have taught others that they are totally capable of reading Tarot too! The main takeaway is not to give up! Take things one day at a time, celebrate your wins and the positives, and embrace opportunities for growth! If people are not supporting you or helping with your growth, don’t sweat them. Do your thing and you will find your way and the right people! We all bring something unique to the table that has value.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I love meeting people from all walks of life and hearing their stories! Over the beautiful imagery of Tarot cards, I get to know my clients. Often times, there is an obstacle they may be uncertain they can overcome or they could be healing from a heartbreak from the loss of a relationship or loved one. During that time, that is their chance to be heard. I believe my clients save themselves. We discuss how they are enough. We chat about self care practices and being brave, making the big moves! From my experience as a RN, I often recommend clients seek professional medical or mental health services since Tarot will never replace professional help that is needed for health and healing. My clients tell me (or even write!) thanking me for our conversation, many saying they felt better just getting the words out in a safe space! I have performed Tarot readings for adults and children.
With a parent/guardian’s permission, I have helped children talk about their feelings. At an event, I read for three kids after getting permission from their mom. The oldest, a little boy around 10 years old, wanted to learn tennis but hadn’t told Mom. Another, a little girl who was around 8 years old, said her heart hurt from her Dad not coming by when he said he would. She said her heart hurt for a long time but she hadn’t told anyone. A third little girl, similar in age, talked about a project she wanted to make as an arts and crafts project. Of course, I shared these insights with their mother who was appreciative and snapped a picture of them all together to send to her! That is one of many favorite memories that I have about professionally reading Tarot for others.
People have many feelings. People compartmentalize, pushing down experiences and feelings that resurface because they haven’t been addressed. It is about having the conversations and putting thoughts and feelings into words while feeling less alone while having a caring, knowledgeable Tarot reader keep them company. I am proud to say that I have helped many people who are open to sharing their journey with me! Many times, my readings end with a high five or hug! I take pride in being a safe space where people can get an informative Tarot reading that helps them.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First and foremost, do what you love doing. I have even told my kids that I don’t want them to necessarily go for the high paying jobs of doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc. Yes, we need these people. However, if your heart is not in it, that makes for a miserable life since we work most of our lives. If you love what you do, it is like getting paid while being happy doing what you are good at!
Secondly, read books. When we read, we are “feeding” our minds with knowledge that help us grow in our knowledge base and keeps our minds sharp! Question the world around you and ask “Why?”. Little kids ask why much more often than adults. We must never stop seeking knowledge and questioning the world around us so that we can be informed decision makers.
Third, love others and be open to being loved. When we genuinely care about others, we make a difference at home for ourselves, our families, and our communities! Embrace differences and different cultures and ways of looking at things. We grow when we are open to learning from each other. Compassion and forgiveness are good for the soul too.
