Meet Kasey Burmood

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kasey Burmood. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kasey with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I think my work ethic stemmed from a combination of not wanting to let people down and wanting to be good at everything I do. Both of which don’t sound that great when you say it out loud, but I want those around me to know that I’m reliable, the work will get done, and it will be done well. Over the years the source has morphed though, it has turned into not wanting to let myself down; I have high standards for myself, so I push myself to succeed.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My business card says I’m the Creative Advisor to a women owned lingerie boutique in Kansas City, so I help run the store, decide what pieces are needed, and consult on future inventory purchases. When I’m at the shop however, I get to help women find whatever they need to feel confident in themselves and their bodies. Being able to see a change from when they went into the dressing room to when they come out is very fulfilling. Outside of work I’m in school to be a mortician, I make chainmaille clothing and accessories, do some modeling, love to write poetry, and I help my husband in his studio (he’s a sculptor). Most recently I finished up some chainmaille necklaces, published another one of my poems, and completed a 10 foot mosaic. I don’t have a lot of spare time, but I like to fill it doing the things I enjoy.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I would say being a self-motivator with good time management skills is going to be very helpful in any journey. Being able to give myself goals and keep myself on track helps on the job and in my day to day life. If you can’t motivate yourself to do the things you need to do, then you’re going to fall behind and never get them done. Being able to manage your time well also helps drastically so that you can maximize your days as well as know when you can give yourself a break. If you’re always procrastinating and leaving things to the last minute or taking a long time to do them you’ll always be stressed about getting things done. I also think being personable and empathetic will help you understand the different types of people you interact with. When you can view someone as a real person, they can also view you that way and it makes your interactions a lot easier.

Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?

When I feel overwhelmed I make myself lists; I will create categories such as work, school, home, etc. and write down each thing I need to do in those categories. Even the smallest tasks I’ll write down. I’ll choose which tasks I think I can check off and complete them. Being able to see everything I need to do and seeing progress in completing them gives me motivation to continue.
