Meet Kasey L. Martin

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kasey L. Martin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Kasey L. , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

I’ve always had an inner knowing, from an early age, that I was different in how I thought. I never felt compelled to follow what the majority did and have always walked my own path. I realized this early on through moments of self-discovery, where I went against my instincts and followed others, only to feel out of alignment with myself. I’m a deeply feeling person, and when I ignore what’s on my heart, I feel it deeply in my body. To avoid that discomfort, I learned to stay true to myself.

I believe confidence and self-esteem develop when we stop conforming to external expectations or societal ideals. I’ve always been comfortable being alone, so not fitting in was never something that bothered me. Confidence, to me, stems from self-knowledge and self-acceptance. When you truly know who you are and where you’re headed, no one can stand in your way. Your purpose and path are yours and no one else’s.

The more I evolve, the deeper my confidence grows and the higher my self-esteem becomes. Of course, there is still unlearning that needs to happen, but the more I heal, the more confident I become. My mindfulness practice and spirituality help me with that every day.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an artist who is currently deepening my practice in writing and directing. My work centers on diverse voices, telling stories that connect us, heal us, and remind us of our shared humanity. Authenticity is key, in both art and life. When we align with who we truly are, we unlock the potential for deep healing and transformation.

Growing up in Hampton, VA as an only child, I was always drawn to imagination and storytelling — whether through writing, drawing, or photography. My journey really began when my aunt noticed my knack for capturing moments, and my mother gifted me a camera at 15. I started taking it to school, capturing candid, fly-on-the-wall moments and portraits — a style that still shapes my work today.

It definitely wasn’t a straightforward path to filmmaking. I didn’t immediately see it as a career path. I explored different majors in undergrad before rediscovering my passion for film. Watching films was such a normal part of my life that I didn’t realize how much it shaped me. I loved immersing myself in different worlds and learning about other cultures. But rarely did I see myself reflected on screen. That absence is what my current work responds to.

As a Black Queer woman, I understand the power of my voice. Growing up without seeing people like me represented can make you question your place in the world. That’s why I’m so passionate about telling stories that resonate with marginalized communities. For me, it’s about healing, self-love, and authenticity because when we tell our own stories, we reclaim our power.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey were resilience, self-awareness, and adaptability. Resilience, because the creative path isn’t easy. There’s rejection, uncertainty, and times when you’re working with almost nothing. But every setback taught me something valuable and deepened my sense of purpose. Self-awareness, because knowing who I am and what drives me has always been my foundation. It’s allowed me to navigate through noise and distractions, staying grounded in my truth. And adaptability, because being able to pivot when needed, whether it’s learning a new skill or adjusting my vision when resources aren’t there, that’s kept me moving forward.

For anyone early in their journey, I’d say don’t be afraid of failure or change. Those moments are when you’ll grow the most. Cultivate a strong sense of self. Knowing who you are will guide you through any challenge. And stay flexible. Things won’t always go according to plan, but the ability to adjust while staying true to your purpose is what will keep you moving toward your goals. Keep learning, stay curious, and remember that your journey doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

I’m definitely looking for partnerships and collaborations! I’m eager to connect with brands that are committed to telling diverse stories and championing work from diverse directors. I’m also excited to meet fellow artists, both in Atlanta, where I’m currently based, and worldwide. I love traveling and connecting with creatives across different cultures. If you have a story to tell or are looking for a like-minded artist to collaborate with, I’d love to hear from you.

Folks can connect with me through my website www.kaseylmartin.com or social media @kaseylmartin. Let’s create something magical together!
