We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kat Beanland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
In navigating spaces where I am the only one who looks like me, I have found strength and guidance in two powerful verses from the Bible: Jeremiah 29:11 and Proverbs 18:16. These verses resonate deeply with me, affirming my belief in a purposeful path and the knowledge that excellence shines through. By holding onto this faith, I approach every situation with determination and focus, knowing that my work will speak for itself and will be recognized, regardless of any external differences. This mindset has been instrumental in shaping my success and effectiveness, enabling me to thrive in environments where I stand out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a business coach and inspirational speaker. I have always joked that my job is to help people achieve their dreams, and to some extent, that is exactly what I do. As a business coach, I guide you through the challenges of entrepreneurship while celebrating your successes. I am here as your constant support through both the highs and lows, offering a listening ear during tough times and a toast to your accomplishments.
As an inspirational speaker, my goal is to inspire the greatness that already exists within each person, and to ignite the spark that leads you to happiness and fulfillment. However, I believe that my greatest joy in both coaching and speaking is demonstrating to people that they can have it all. You can be a successful entrepreneur who also enjoys time with family, takes vacations, and reads for pleasure. It is in those moments when my clients realize “I can,” that I realize I have done my job well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back at my journey, I believe three qualities that played a significant role were resilience, focus, and communication skills. Being resilient helped me bounce back from setbacks and turn challenges into opportunities. Focus clarified my purpose and drive to keep pushing forward despite obstacles. Effective communication was a crucial tool in conveying my ideas, building relationships, and achieving my goals. My advice for those early in their journey is to focus on developing these three traits diligently. Embrace resilience as a strength that will help you weather storms and grow from setbacks. Cultivate focus to keep your eye on your goals, no matter how tough the road gets. And always hone your communication skills, as they play a pivotal role in personal and professional success. Remember that continuous improvement in these areas will set a solid foundation for a successful journey.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“Drop the Ball” by Tiffany Dufu has been a significant book in my personal and professional development journey. One of the most valuable nuggets of wisdom I gained from this book is the importance of prioritizing and delegating tasks effectively. Dufu’s insights on letting go of perfectionism and embracing imperfection have been transformative, allowing me to focus more on meaningful tasks that align with my goals. Another impactful lesson was learning how to establish boundaries to achieve a better work-life balance, ultimately leading to increased productivity and well-being. Overall, “Drop the Ball” has been a guiding light in my pursuit of personal growth and success.
