We recently connected with Kat Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Kat, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I have dealt with mental health issues since before I even knew what they were. From depression to anxiety and periods of my life where I just felt lost, managing my mental health is a challenge I face on a daily basis. What helps me to overcome is remembering I don’t have to pretend I’m okay if I genuinely don’t feel that way. It’s okay to have feelings, especially the ones that can be hard to manage because you cannot heal if you pretend you’re not hurting. I have daily habits I practice, as well as small things I do ahead of time to help myself manage in case I have a hard time. I used to take it one day at a time until I realized that on the days I’m overwhelmed that I can take things one hour at a time. And if that’s too much I take it one moment at a time because I know if I got through the last moment, I will get through this one. I know everything that happens leads to my benefit so I accept what life shows me in both the best and worst moments.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Kat Davis, aka the voice behind A Black Kat’s Voice. I like to refer to myself as an artist who uses words to heal. I’ve gone through a lot in my life so I advocate for mental health and the truth behind how it feels to deal with emotions you may not always understand. I began sharing my personal stories through a podcast/blog but it didn’t feel as personal as I would’ve liked. That’s when I shifted my focus to what I like to call positive content creation. I started making video clips, writing poetry books, performing at open mics, and using my words in as many ways as I could think of to show people how if I’m healing in my own life they can do the same. There are times I may randomly record a podcast, but I’m more focused on writing, performing my poetry, and making more content for people to look at that reminds them of the power of healing themselves.
I’m a writer with five published books in my poetry collections and many more to come. I use the experiences from my life to describe in words my journey through abuse, trauma, and healing. I make an effort to keep my books reasonably priced for my supporters because I know what it’s like to enjoy an artist but can’t afford their work. My books are available with free samples through my work online, ebooks for convenience, and physical copies for the people like me who enjoy having an actual copy of their favorite book they can hold. I also currently have my social media and podcast at no cost for tidbits of wisdom for people that don’t always have a lot of time, but still want to support or enjoy my content.
I just put out my latest book, entitled, Peace Within the Fall most recently. It’s my latest addition to my poetry collections where I explain how I had to find positive energy about crushing experiences where immeasurable trauma has infinite nuance through healing emotions. There is always “peace within the fall’ when you heal. I have two events coming up before the end of the year and I’m excited to have so many opportunities to share my words with the people they resonate with most. I’m looking to do more performances in the future and I am available for bookings, collaborations, and more. All my work including my books, social media links, and contact info are available on my website.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that were most impactful on my journey to where I am today are honesty, dedication, and faith. Honesty is key when starting any busines or following your dream because achieving goals involves knowing what you’re good at, what you need help with, and where you can improve. All things you can only essentially build on if you’re completely honest with yourself and whoever is helping you build. Dedication is important because you can have the biggest dreams in the world but if you don’t take the time to do the work, even on the days when you don’t feel like it, you are robbing yourself of the gift of seeing yourself reach your highest potential. Faith is a big factor as well because when you’re starting off, you can have so many ideas or even a dream nobody can see but you. It’s not always about the work, the honesty, or dedication, but the faith in knowing that even if you don’t have what you want yet you know you are going to get there. No matter what. These are all things I’ve learned on my journey, and I’m still learning new aspects of where I can be more honest, dedicated, and using my faith to make it all coexist how it needs to.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m absolutely looking for more people to partner and collaborate with. I would be interested in being a ghostwriter for someone who may have a great idea for a story, but need someone to put it all together. I’m also available for bookings for poetry performances where I’d love to help a library, community, or people who want to see the power of using words to heal. I’m not only a writer for myself, but would love the opportunity to help others feel seen and supported on their special days like anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, funerals, and more with a custom poem. I’m available for bookings as a writer, performer, or both.
