Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kate Chen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kate, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Doing what I am passionate about motivatives me to be bold and take risks. I think it is important to do what you are passionate about in this life and pursue it. On the other hand, I credit my parents and mentors for planting the seed of resilience in me. Both my parents came from humble beginning, and they were hard working and driven. They believed in never giving up on goals, and doing the best I can whenever I can. Watching and learning from my mentors also inspired values like work ethic, integrity, and compassion to me. They were some of the kindest and the most patient teachers I’ve known, and I admired them for that.
Some of the mottos I live by are stay true to yourself, be kind to others but also be kind to yourself, being resilient through the storm…Sometimes, they are easier said than done. It’s a practice. I feel I am still growing and there are so much to learn, and I try to take on one thing at a time and enjoy the tasks. What is life if you don’t enjoy it?
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hi, my name is Kate Chen. I am a filmmaker in LA. I love movies since I was kid. One of my favorite thing to do was going to the theatre to see a movie, or watch TV at home with family and friends. After some years of studying, I decided to go into filmmaking and acting.
Part of the excitement about the job is working and making films with a group of talented creatives. It is invigorating to collaborate with filmmakers, to see and understand their vision while being able to bring my ideas to the table, and create something together. During the filming process, which at times can be grueling, it is ensuring to work with professionals who I can trust and rely on, and certainly empowering. The crew and casts are like a family. Often, I am amazed of how talented and precise the filmmakers are, and I love working with them. There are a lot of efforts put into filmmaking. I have worked in front of camera as well as behind the scene, and I definitely want to keep making films and stay active in creating on the set.
Also, I am going to take on new roles as associate producer and producer in upcoming films soon. Stay tune for the new updates!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First, I would suggest to do the research in the career and job that you want to do. Even though I have wanted to start getting into filmmaking earlier, I have been learning about the career for a while. The work is serious, but I find that having a sense of fun and not taking myself too seriously is a good balance during working process. Approaching the projects with a sense of ‘I don’t know everything, and I don’t know what is going to unfold’ is exciting for me.
Lastly, if you have a dream job that is your calling, do it. It is never too late or too early.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Yes I am definitely working with creatives, filmmakers, and people who are passionate in making films and TV. The business is volatile, and working with a team consists of reliable people is important. Having worked in front of camera as an actress and behind the scene as a film crew, I find that working with professionals is vital especially in the the grueling hours. Also, it’s more important to be kind and respectful to fellow co-workers on the set.
I am interested in making films with a diverse group of talents, as I believe everyone has something to offer and with their perspectives and talents. As an Asian-American who grew up in two sides of the Earth, I felt the feeling of being misplaced, misfit, or being an outsider. And the difference in culture values can bring cultural shock, excitement, and even traumas and suffering. I think these intricacies and growing out of suffering are a part of life. And, artists who have similar experiences can make beautiful stories and films that resonate with audience globally.
In the long-run, I am going to produce films. So I am looking into developing scripts and projects as well.
