We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kate Gerwin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kate, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I believe my optimism comes from the people I choose to surround myself with. I am blessed with a core group of people who support me and lift me up. They remind me where I have been, and where I am going. I want to make change in the world and the people that support me know my values. When I get discouraged, they are always there to remind me who I am and that I have the power to accomplish the goals I have set out in front of me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an owner and operator of Happy Accidents cocktail bar and distillery. We are looking to grow our company into a power player in the world of cocktails, spirits and RTD (ready to drink cocktails).
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Empathy, Authenticity, Vulnerability. Without those powerful qualities I don’t think success can be attainable.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
“So you want to talk about Race” Ijeoma Oluo – this book taught me how to step outside of my perspective and see things I was completely unaware of. I was able to learn about what privilege is and how I am able to navigate the world differently than others. It started a personal growth journey I will always be on, and am grateful for.
